The Unshakeable Truth: When the Gospel Meets the Doubt

There are moments in the field, or even just sitting in quiet reflection at home, when the Spirit seems to nudge you toward a question that feels monumental. Maybe it’s a question an investigator has been circling for weeks, or perhaps it’s a quiet doubt that has been gnawing at the edges of your own testimony. It can feel like standing at the edge of a canyon, looking down at a truth so vast it almost seems unbelievable.

We’ve all been there, haven't we? Feeling the weight of what we know—the reality of the Atonement, the power of the gospel—and having to find the words, or the conviction, to share it with someone who is still wrestling with the 'what if.' It’s the perennial challenge of being a disciple: how do you share the glorious, life-altering reality of the restored gospel with someone who hasn't yet seen the light switch on?

The Power of 'What If?'

The song we listened to today, "What If I Told You," captures this perfectly. It’s built on a series of gentle, yet utterly seismic, questions: *What if I told you that you could be saved?* *What if I told you that all of the guilt and all of the shame... could be washed away?*

As returned missionaries, we learn quickly that the initial approach can sometimes feel like reciting doctrine from a manual. But the best moments—the moments that truly stick with an investigator, or even with us as we study for our own missionary discussions—are when we move beyond the *what* and lean into the *what if*. We have to make it personal. We have to make it an invitation.

This is where the work of the Spirit becomes our greatest tool. It’s not about having the perfect answer; it’s about having the perfect *invitation*. It’s pointing them toward the empty tomb, the evidence of Christ’s sacrifice, and then asking, “What would you do?”

From Theory to Testimony

If you’re preparing for your next mission, or if you’re just trying to deepen your discipleship here at home, remember this: Your testimony isn't just a recitation of facts; it's the echo of your own experience with the Savior. When you can share your own 'what if'—the 'what if I hadn't met the Savior' feeling—that’s when the Spirit moves. That’s when the gospel truly takes root.

This week, I want to challenge us all to practice the art of the gentle invitation. Instead of just listing covenants, try framing it as a question: "What if there was a way to feel truly at peace, regardless of what life throws at you?"
