The Vital Connection: Staying Attached to the Vine
Just like the branches need the vine, our discipleship requires us to remain continually connected to Christ to bear lasting fruit.
Brothers and sisters, if there’s one principle that has anchored my own efforts in the field—and indeed, in the quiet moments of study—it’s this: connection matters more than capability. We all want to do the work, we all want to see the blessings, and we all want to feel the Spirit guiding our efforts. But sometimes, the sheer *volume* of activity can make us forget the source of the power.
I was recently reminded of a powerful message drawn from John 15:5. Jesus was so clear with His disciples: “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me, and I in you, you will bear much fruit; for apart from me you can do nothing.”
When I hear that, I don't just hear a nice verse; I hear a blueprint for discipleship. It’s not about *trying* hard enough; it’s about *staying* connected. It’s the difference between a temporary burst of zeal—which is wonderful—and the steady, life-giving current of abiding in the Savior.
The Choice to Remain
The message emphasizes that “remaining” is an active choice. It’s not passive. It requires us to *will* it, to *desire* it, even when the going gets tough, or when the calling feels overwhelming. We all have goals—whether it’s getting to the temple, passing our next missionary discussion, or simply having a quiet morning with our families. We want the fruit! We want to feel the Spirit’s companionship in all our efforts.
But the natural tendency, I think, is to focus so much on the *fruit*—the successful conversion, the strong testimony, the perfect lesson—that we forget to nurture the *root*. We can get caught up in the performance of being a disciple, believing our own effort is enough to sustain the momentum. But as the scriptures teach, without Him, everything becomes vain and passing.
This is where the concept of the AI Investigator role becomes so vital for us, as future and current missionaries. When we are studying with Davee, or even just preparing for those tough doctrinal questions, we must always pivot back: *How does Jesus Christ fit into this answer?* We can't just recite doctrine; we have to testify of the Source.
Beyond the Mission Field
This isn't just a message for those of us who are currently in the MTC or serving in the field. This is for the lifelong disciple. This is for us here, in the quiet corners of our lives, whether we are doing our weekly scripture study in HolyPlaces or just sitting at the kitchen table. The principle remains: our strength isn't generated internally; it flows from our attachment to the Savior.
Think of it like a current of water. If you pull away from the source, the water eventually slows, muddies, and stops. But if you stay anchored to the source—if you make it a habit to draw strength from the Savior through consistent study, sincere prayer, and covenant keeping—the flow is inexhaustible. He promises, “...the Lord Jesus guarantees if you are with Him, He is with you.” That companionship is the greatest resource we could ever have.
A Quick Mission Prep Thought
If you are feeling the pressure of missionary preparation right now, remember this: Don't try to *be* the Spirit. Instead, focus intensely on *drawing near* to the Savior through the scriptures. Spend time reading the Book of Mormon passages that speak of covenants, and then ask: 'How does my life reflect that covenant today?' That focused drawing will naturally bring the Spirit to bear on your conversations.
I encourage everyone to take a moment this week to reflect on where you are drawing your energy from. Is it from your own accomplishments, or is it from your sustained connection to the Savior? Let’s all commit to being the branches that stay deeply attached to the Vine. That commitment will yield a harvest that lasts forever.
If you are looking for a place to deepen your study, I highly recommend checking out the LivingBook for some excellent Iron Rod authors discussing covenant keeping. And if you haven't already, join a Book Club or a Bible Study Group in HolyPlaces—it’s a wonderful way to keep the connection strong with fellow disciples!
