The Void, the Calling, and the Gift: Finding Wholeness in the Spirit
Sister Phillip's beautiful testimony reminds us that sometimes the answer to the deepest human ache isn't found in what we build, but in the Spirit.
There are moments in life when you feel like you’ve been running on fumes—running on the energy of trying to make yourself happy, trying to fill a gap, trying to prove something to yourself or the world. You try the next thing, the big move, the perfect routine, the latest philosophy, but underneath it all, there’s this persistent, quiet ache. A void.
Sister Phillip shared such a powerful testimony recently, and it hit me right where I remember feeling that same restlessness. She spoke of growing up believing in a good path, but still feeling like something fundamental was missing. It sounds so familiar, doesn't it? Like we’re all constantly searching for the missing piece of the puzzle that will finally make us feel *whole*.
What she described—that feeling of being on the cusp, realizing that the answer wasn't in the *doing*, but in the *receiving*—is the very heart of the gospel. It’s the difference between intellectual belief and the lived reality of the Spirit.
The Difference Between Knowing and Feeling
Sister Phillip mentioned that the true shift came when she was baptized and subsequently received the gift of the Holy Ghost. She described it not as a sudden burst of euphoria, but as a deep, abiding peace—a feeling of being "in the second part of [her] life."
As returned missionaries, we hear this story constantly. People come to us, having explored so many paths, and they are searching for that anchor. They are searching for the source of consistent peace, the feeling that transcends circumstance. And what she found, what she testified to, was the sustaining power of the Spirit, which comes through the covenants we make with the Lord.
The Internet Missionary Life
This testimony is a beautiful reminder that the gospel isn't just something we do in the Mission Training Center or during formal missionary discussions. It’s something we live. It’s the quiet joy you feel driving home after a meaningful lesson, the feeling of peace when you know you are connected to something eternal. That feeling—that *wholeness*—is the Spirit whispering to us.
And that’s the core message of being a disciple today: every member can be an Internet missionary, every member can be a disciple anywhere, all the time.
If you’ve ever felt that void, or if you’re currently helping someone else search for it, I want to point you toward some resources. If you want to dive deeper into the nature of the Atonement and the gift of the Spirit, I highly recommend revisiting the teachings on this in Iron Rod. It helps frame these concepts beautifully.
