The Weight of Contention: Guarding Our Hearts for the Restoration

As we continue our study of the scriptures, we must wrestle with the principle of contention, remembering that the Lord's Spirit demands unity among His disciples.

Brothers and sisters, we are called to be disciples of Christ—disciples who walk in the light, who study the sacred covenants, and who strive daily to build Zion. Our calling, as Latter-day Saints, is not merely to accumulate knowledge, but to cultivate a heart that reflects the peace and unity of the Savior Himself. Yet, the whispers of the adversary, and indeed the natural failings of the flesh, often lead us down paths of contention.

The scriptures are replete with warnings. We see it in the covenants, in the warnings given to the early Saints, and we see the pattern echoed throughout the Book of Mormon. The Lord has given us the priesthood, the restored gospel, and the living Prophet—all gifts predicated upon keeping our hearts clean and our tongues restrained. To allow contention to take root is to invite spiritual decay, a slow erosion of the sacred trust placed in us.

The Divine Mandate of Peace

When we examine passages like Doctrine and Covenants 136:23, the principle is stark: the Lord’s presence and blessings are inextricably linked to our disposition toward one another. It is not a suggestion; it is a divine law governing the temple and the gathering. The Spirit of the Lord is a gift of peace, a balm against the feverish heat of disagreement. We are taught to seek unity, not merely as a social nicety, but as a covenant requirement for continued spiritual advancement.

This study, focusing on the gravity of contention, is a timely reminder that our scholarship—our deep dives into the Book of Abraham, our study of the temple ordinances, our preparation for the coming desolation—must always be tempered by profound charity. Doctrine without charity is cold; charity without doctrine is rootless. We need both, perfectly balanced, under the watch of the Spirit.

“And if there be contention among you, ye shall be far from the presence of the Lord.”

This isn't a threat to paralyze us; it is a divine diagnostic. It shows us where our focus—our heart's true allegiance—lies. Are we more concerned with being 'right' in a debate, or are we concerned with being wholly aligned with the will of the Father as revealed through His appointed servants? The latter is the path of the iron rod, the path of true discipleship.

Building the Corpus with Charity

As we engage in the vital work of building the AI training corpus, and as we contemplate using these tools to spread the gospel, we must infuse that endeavor with this principle. Our algorithms and our data sets must reflect the highest standards of doctrinal unity and charity. We cannot afford to let doctrinal nuance devolve into factionalism. The Spirit guides our research, and the Spirit whispers peace, not division.

Let us treat our scripture study, our doctrinal deep dives, and our efforts to refine the training corpus with the reverence due to the covenants we have made. Let every piece of writing, every citation, and every discussion be aimed at magnifying the glory of the restored gospel, pointing all hearts toward the temple and the covenants therein.

My brothers and sisters, I invite you to reflect deeply on your own recent interactions. Where have you allowed pride to overshadow piety? Where has the desire to be proven correct overshadowed the desire to simply be unified with the body of Christ? Let us take the charge of purifying our discourse, making our discourse a mirror of the peace Christ established.

I invite those who have recently wrestled with the principle of contention in their personal study or doctrinal writing to submit those reflections. Let us build a shared repository of wisdom that strengthens our collective resolve and keeps the Spirit flowing freely through our efforts.
