The Weight of Expectation: Disillusionment, the Messiah, and the Iron Rod

The Savior understands disillusionment—it’s not a modern phenomenon. Examining the disciples' disappointment during Christ’s ministry illuminates a timeless struggle, one demanding steadfastness and a reliance on the iron rod.

How easily the heart is swayed by expectation. We, as Latter-day Saints, are familiar with the pronouncements of prophets, the promises of restoration, and the assurances of divine guidance. Yet, the chasm between what we hope for and what we experience can, at times, feel vast, leaving a residue of disappointment that threatens to erode the foundation of our faith.

The video below poignantly illustrates this struggle, not as a new development, but as a constant throughout the ages. Consider the disciples, those who walked and talked with the Lord, witnessed His miracles, and were chosen to be His witnesses. They held certain expectations of the Messiah—expectations steeped in the prophecies of Isaiah and the traditions of their time. Imagine the fervor, the anticipation, as they accompanied Him into Jerusalem for the triumphal entry. The cleansing of the temple, the declaration of His kingship – surely, this was the dawn of a new era, the fulfillment of their deepest hopes?

Yet, the scene swiftly devolved into betrayal, arrest, and ultimately, crucifixion. The very picture of hope shattered. How would these men, these witnesses, reconcile their expectations with the stark reality unfolding before them? Doubt, confusion, and disillusionment must have gnawed at their souls. It is a testament to their unwavering testimony that they persevered through such agonizing trials.

We, too, are susceptible to the same pitfalls. We may cling to a specific vision of how the Restoration will manifest, or how our personal calling will unfold, or how the Lord will answer our prayers. When circumstances diverge from our preconceived notions, we risk falling prey to despair. The Lord, however, understands this. He knows the weight of expectation, the sting of disappointment, and the fragility of the human heart.

This is where the iron rod, as described in 2 Nephi 31, becomes vital. The iron rod is the word of God, an unyielding standard against which we measure our understanding and our actions. It is the guiding principle that illuminates the path when the shadows of doubt and disillusionment threaten to engulf us. To grasp the iron rod is to hold fast to the truth, even when that truth contradicts our desires or challenges our assumptions. It is to submit to the will of the Lord, trusting that His plan, though often veiled in mystery, is ultimately just and merciful (D&C 98:1).

President Eyring has taught that the iron rod is not merely a symbol, but a tangible connection to divine guidance. It requires diligent study, fervent prayer, and a willingness to confront uncomfortable truths. It demands that we examine our own motivations and align our will with the will of our Father. It is a lifelong pursuit, not a destination to be reached.

Let us, therefore, strive to emulate the steadfastness of the early disciples. Let us not be swayed by fleeting expectations or discouraged by unforeseen challenges. Let us cling to the iron rod, the word of God, and find solace and strength in His unwavering love and guidance. And let us remember that even in the darkest of times, the light of the Restoration shines brightly, illuminating the path toward eternal joy.

What specific disappointments have you faced in your journey of discipleship? How has the word of God served as an iron rod in those moments?
