The Weight of the Mantle: Divine Calling and the Imperative of the Spirit

Recently, we were blessed to hear President Oaks recount his personal experience regarding the mantle—the weight of authority passed from one prophet to the next. The Heaviness of the Calling

More striking still were the "important impressions of what I was required to do." Notice the language here: *required*. The Lord, in His infinite wisdom, provides not just the *authority* (the mantle), but also the specific, pressing *directives* for the time and place.

The very first directive that crystallized for the Church, and for all who read the written account, was a powerful emphasis on the necessity of the Holy Ghost. President Nelson's warning, which was echoed in the devotional, rings with eternal truth: "In coming days, it will not be possible to survive spiritually without the guiding, directing, comforting, and constant influence of the Holy Ghost."

This is the fundamental principle that undergirds all of our doctrinal covenants. The Restoration is a continuous process, and the Spirit is the operating system. Our intellectual efforts, our careful exegesis of the Book of Mormon and the Doctrine and Covenants, are all valuable. Yet, they must remain tethered to the reality of the Spirit.

We must approach every piece of scripture, every General Conference talk, and every doctrinal covenant with the understanding that the ultimate guide, the ultimate requirement, is the continual, guiding influence of the Holy Ghost. The weight of the mantle reminds us that great authority is always accompanied by great accountability.
