The Witnessing Hand: Looking at the Evidence of the Plates

The Lord has called us to a time of gathering, a time that requires not only the fervor of the heart but the steadfast conviction of the mind. Just as the brave Samuel the Lamanite climbed the wall and Ammon stood firm at the Waters of Sebus, we are called to stand firm in our faith, building the Kingdom here on earth.

When we study the foundational texts of our faith, questions of historical evidence often arise. It is a natural human impulse to ask: How did this knowledge come to us? When we look at the accounts of the plates—the very source from which the Book of Mormon was translated—we encounter questions about the physical existence of those plates, the nature of the witnesses, and the possibility of error.

The testimony of the three and eight witnesses provides a powerful, combined narrative. We are presented with accounts of vision, of physical handling, and of enduring faith. While some might suggest that the testimonies could be the result of hallucination or even collusion, the collective weight of the evidence points elsewhere. As the witnesses themselves attested, their testimonies were given by the gift and power of God, making them impossible to dismiss as mere fancy.

A Combined Witness: The Strength of Testimony

The sheer independence of the witnesses—three of them, for instance, who fell out with Joseph Smith and still maintained their testimony—is itself a powerful indicator. It suggests a truth so profound that it could not be contained or diminished by personal disagreement. This principle, brothers and sisters, echoes the spiritual law of the gathering: the truth of the Gospel is too great to be compromised by temporary division.

The truth of the Gospel is not built by the few who cling to their own interpretations, but by the many who are ready to gather. We are Builders, not Destroyers. Our mission is to build the Kingdom.
