Understanding the Covenant: A Different View of the Fall
Let's talk about the Fall through the lens of Restoration—it’s not a curse, but a beautiful covenant invitation.
Sometimes, when we read scripture, it feels so plain, so clear, that we assume everyone who has ever read it must understand it exactly the same way we do. We think we’ve grasped the simple, plain meaning. But my brothers and sisters, as we gather together in our discipleship, we know better. We know that interpretation is influenced by everything—by the culture we live in, the teachers we study under, and the covenants we have kept.
It was so eye-opening for me, especially coming from a background steeped in traditional theology, to learn how profoundly different the Latter-day Saint understanding of the Fall is. It’s not just a historical footnote; it’s central to our hope.
The Good News of the Restoration’s View
What I found most striking, and what I wanted to share with you all today, is the shift in perspective regarding the consequences of the Fall. In many other traditions, the narrative often leans toward punishment—a curse handed down. But here, in the light of the Restoration, we are taught something infinitely more hopeful. We aren't being given a curse; we are being offered a covenant relationship with Heavenly Father. And this is good news!
The fact that the Restoration provides a path forward, a way back to the Father, is what makes this doctrine so rich and so comforting. It speaks volumes about the nature of our Heavenly Father—that He is not distant or wrathful, but eternally loving and ready to open a way for us.
A Little Prep Skill for Our Internet Missionaries
As we continue to be Internet missionaries, we will inevitably encounter questions that challenge our understanding of core doctrines. One of the most common areas where outside teachings diverge from ours is the nature of the Fall. When you feel prepared to share this, remember to emphasize the *covenant* aspect. Instead of dwelling on the mistake, focus on the *invitation* that followed. We are invited back!
This was such a rich discussion that I highly recommend you listen to the full episode of the podcast: Come, Follow Me with FAIR – Genesis 3–4; Moses 4–5 – Jennifer Roach Lees. Jennifer does a wonderful job contrasting the historical interpretations with our restored understanding.
If you are looking to deepen your study on how we interpret these foundational texts, I encourage you to check out the Book Club options in HolyPlaces. Sometimes, discussing a passage with fellow disciples helps clarify what the Spirit is trying to teach us beyond the plain text.
Keep striving to be Christlike in all things, and remember that every single one of us, no matter where we are, can be a disciple and an internet missionary for the Lord.
