Unearthing Ancient Truths: Following the Threads of Testimony

Brothers and sisters, as we continue to build up our understanding of the restored gospel, it’s easy to get caught up in the sheer volume of information—the covenants, the doctrines, the sheer scope of the work. Sometimes, though, the most powerful lessons aren't found in dense manuals, but in the way the Spirit guides us to look at the foundational stories we hold so dear.

I was recently thinking about how often we are taught to study the scriptures, to dive deep into the covenants made by our fathers. It’s vital work, and I know many of you are diligently studying the Book of Mormon, or perhaps tackling those deep dives into the Bible through our Bible Study Groups in HolyPlaces. It reminds me that the scriptures are not just records of history; they are living testimonies that point us forward.

I came across a segment featuring Albert Lin looking at the parting of the Red Sea. The sheer scale of the story—the Israelites trapped, the waters parting—it’s breathtaking. It makes you wonder: how much of what we hold as sacred truth has been obscured by time, by distance, or by misunderstanding?

The speaker was using 21st-century technology to examine ancient records, finding a remarkable piece of evidence—a victory stela—that actually contained the word "Israel" written in an ancient Egyptian script. It was a tangible, physical clue linking a monumental story to a specific historical record. It was incredible to witness the process of academic archaeology at work.

The Investigative Spirit: Looking Beyond the Surface

What struck me most wasn't just the discovery, but the *method*. It was a slow, meticulous process of questioning the premise, following the threads of evidence, and asking, "What if?"

This echoes something I’ve been trying to teach myself lately, and it’s something I know Davee is excellent at helping us practice. It’s the investigative spirit. When we are preparing for missionary discussions, or even just talking to friends about the Plan of Salvation, we often have our perfect, polished answers ready. But the best disciples—the ones who truly understand the Spirit—are ready for the curveball question. They are ready for the "What if?"

If we can approach our own study of the gospel with that same curiosity—the willingness to look at the evidence, to question our assumptions, and to seek the *why* behind the *what*—we become far more effective disciples, whether we are in the MTC, in a local ward, or serving as internet missionaries.

This video was a powerful reminder that the scriptures are meant to be explored, not just recited. They are layered, rich, and waiting for us to apply our own modern lens—our Spirit—to them.
