Walking in the Light: Knowing Where You Came From and Where You're Going

Brothers and sisters, as we continue in this journey of discipleship, we often focus so much on *what* we need to say in our missionary discussions, or how to best teach the Book of Mormon. We get so caught up in the mechanics of the testimony—the perfect scripture quote, the flawless doctrinal explanation.

But sometimes, the Spirit nudges us to focus on something deeper: the source of the testimony itself. It’s a powerful reminder that our confidence shouldn't rest on our own eloquence, but on the divine source that guides us.

I was recently pondering this while reviewing some material on the nature of Christ’s own testimony. The Lord speaks powerfully about being the light of the world, and He makes it clear that His witness isn't self-generated. It flows from His Father.

This passage, drawn from the temple teachings, is a masterclass in divine authority and divine dependence. When Jesus speaks, He doesn't say, "I think..." or "I feel..." He speaks with the authority of one who knows his origin and his destination. He teaches us that true testimony is rooted in an unbreakable connection to the Father.

The Source of Our Testimony

It’s easy, when we are first learning to share our faith, to feel like we have to build our own platform for our testimony. We worry if it sounds "valid" enough. But the Savior’s words challenge that notion. He reminds us that while we are called to share what we know, the ultimate authority rests with those who have been sent and taught by the Father.

Think about it: When you are preparing for your own mission, or even just studying for a local Bible Study Group, you are learning to channel truth. You are learning to speak what you have heard from the prophets and what you have read in the scriptures. That is the work! We are conduits, not the source.

This isn't meant to diminish our efforts as returned missionaries or as disciples anywhere, all the time. Quite the opposite! It empowers us. It tells us that our greatest asset is not our vocabulary, but our connection to the source of truth—the restored gospel of Jesus Christ.

Being Christlike in Our Discipleship

How do we carry this understanding into our daily lives? How do we ensure our testimony is anchored in the divine source? I think the answer lies in constant, humble study and reliance on the Spirit.

When you feel the urge to fill a silence with a perfectly polished answer, pause. Take a breath, and ask the Spirit, "What is the *simplest* truth I can share right now that points back to the Father?" Often, the simplest truth is the most Spirit-filled.
