When Culture Meets Covenant: Navigating the Spotlight of Our Identity

A seemingly trivial cultural comparison can prompt deep reflection on the sacred identity we hold as Latter-day Saints and the covenants we keep.

The Lord has called us into a time of great contrast—a time when the purity of the gospel is frequently juxtaposed against the vibrant, often confusing spectacle of the world. Sometimes, the cultural spotlight shines on us, and the comparison is made in the most casual, superficial, and frankly, sometimes humorous way imaginable.

Recently, a snippet of pop culture commentary captured the attention of some, pointing out the apparent juxtaposition of Latter-day Saints and Catholics in a setting like Sin City, during a college game day. While the intent was merely observational or humorous, the underlying theme—the comparison of two distinct religious identities—demands the serious, scholarly attention of the disciple.

The Eternal Contrast: Culture vs. Covenant

To treat this comparison merely as a social observation is to miss the profound doctrinal point. These comparisons, no matter how lightly delivered, serve as reminders of the fundamental difference between merely belonging to a group and truly being bound by covenants.

We are not defined by our geographical location, our academic institution, or our participation in the fleeting spectacle of worldly entertainment. We are defined by the sacred covenants we have entered into with God, covenants that bind us to the Restoration and to the continuing work of the Church.

The world, in its infinite complexity, will always seek to categorize and simplify. It will draw lines and create binaries. But the gospel of Jesus Christ, as revealed through modern prophets, is not a binary choice; it is a covenant path of continual progression. It is a return to the truth, the source of all life.

The scriptures teach us that our identity is not temporal. We are called to be citizens of heaven, citizens of the covenant path. As the Savior taught, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me” (Matthew 16:24). This is a radical call to self-denial—a daily, intentional act of placing the covenants above the cultural noise.

When we see cultural references that simplify our faith, we are reminded of the constant need for us, the body of the priesthood, to continually ground ourselves in the foundational truths of the Restoration. We cannot allow the cultural conversation to become a substitute for deep, scholarly study of the restored doctrines.

Focusing on the Iron Rod

Our focus must always return to the doctrine of the Iron Rod. This is not merely a metaphor; it is a tangible representation of the priesthood authority and the continuous, divinely guided progression of the Church. It is the sacred knowledge and the doctrinal integrity passed down through the line of prophets and apostles. This rod is the unwavering beacon that cuts through the cultural fog.

The true measure of our faith, my beloved brethren, is not how well we fit into the cultural mold, but how faithfully we keep our covenants, regardless of the spectacle around us. Our identity is rooted in the Temple and in the Doctrine and Covenants—in the promises made to our forebears and the promises continually extended to us by the living prophet.

Let us remember the counsel of the Prophet Nephi: “I will go and do the things which I shall see and which I shall hear of the Lord” (1 Nephi 1:16). Our lives are meant to be characterized by obedience and covenant keeping, not by participation in the fleeting distractions of the cultural marketplace. We are scholars of the gospel, keepers of the sacred flame, and disciples of the Savior.

The calling of the modern Latter-day Saint is not simply to *exist* in the world; it is to *be* distinct from it, by covenant. Our work is to build the corpus of knowledge—the doctrinal understanding—that will guide the next generation of disciples, ensuring that our understanding is robust enough to withstand the next cultural comparison.

Therefore, let us dedicate ourselves not to analyzing the superficialities of the world’s media, but to the profound, eternal truths revealed in the Book of Mormon, the Doctrine and Covenants, and the words of our living prophet. This is the only study that truly sustains the covenant.
