When Doubt Creeps In: Remembering the Grace of the Spirit
Feeling like your faith is wavering? Remember that even the greatest disciples struggled. The Spirit is always ready to provide!
Sometimes, when we are out in the field—whether we’re in the MTC, on a mission, or just knocking on a neighbor’s door as internet missionaries—the whispers start. They sound like little doubts, little seeds of inadequacy planted right in the center of our hearts. *If I don't see immediate results, does that mean my faith isn't strong enough?*
It’s a natural thought, isn't it? We are taught to be steadfast, to bear our testimony with conviction, and when the going gets tough, we tend to measure our spiritual strength by the visible harvest. We start treating faith like a transaction: effort equals visible result.
But brothers and sisters, the gospel of Jesus Christ, and the power of the Atonement, operate on a principle far grander than our limited human understanding. We have to embrace the concept of Grace. Everything needed for the work—the strength, the revelation, the companionship—is already predisposed by Heavenly Father. Our job is to trust the process and discover it.
Even the Disciples Wavered
If you’re feeling discouraged today, I want you to look back at the Savior’s own disciples. They were right there! They witnessed the miracle, they walked with Him in intimacy, they saw the glory of the resurrected Christ. Yet, when the moment came, when the shock of the crucifixion settled, their faith wavered. They doubted. They struggled with incredulity.
It’s a profound reminder, isn't it? Even those who walked closest to the light experienced moments of deep doubt. But what did the Savior do? Did He condemn them? No. After gently reproving their lack of belief, what did He do? He sent them out! He commissioned them into the work!
From a purely human, logistical standpoint, it seems illogical. You wouldn't entrust the most vital mission—the core message of the restored gospel—to those who just failed the test. But God doesn't operate on human logic. He operates on divine provision.
The Spirit Provides What We Lack
The reason He sent them out, despite their faltering faith, was because He knew the power of the Holy Ghost was waiting for them at Pentecost. The Spirit would provide what their natural faith could not yet sustain. And history proves that this divine pattern holds true across millennia.
My friends, you do not need to feel desperate today. If you feel a dip in your spiritual reservoir, if the weight of the work feels heavy, remember this: You have the Spirit of the living God available to you. Nothing essential for carrying forward the work is missing.
This is the heart of missionary preparation, whether you are preparing for an assignment or serving as a lifelong disciple right where you are—your home, your workplace, your online community. We are all disciples anywhere, all the time. Let’s lean into the grace that is already waiting for us to discover.
