When Fear Whispers: Choosing Faith in Every Corner of the Field

Sometimes the world feels overwhelming, but remembering that the Spirit always guides us to live by faith, not fear, keeps us steady like a lion.

Brothers and sisters, if you’ve been in the field, you know that the Lord’s work isn't always easy. Sometimes, the opposition feels so coordinated, so overwhelming, that it’s easy to let fear creep in. It whispers doubts when you’re studying scripture, it makes you second-guess a testimony right before a missionary discussion, or it can make you hesitant to share the gospel with a neighbor.

I was reminded this week of a powerful message about how the righteous stand secure, even when the world seems to crumble around them. It’s a reminder that our footing—our spiritual footing—must be rooted in something unshakable: faith.

If you need a little boost today, I wanted to share this message that speaks directly to that core principle: Rifiuta la paura, vivi per fede!

The message highlighted a powerful contrast: the wicked flee when they are pursued, but the just stand secure as a lion. That image—a lion—is what I want us to strive for in our discipleship. It’s not about never facing danger; it’s about knowing *who* is with us when the danger comes.

The Great Divide: Fear vs. Faith

The speaker beautifully articulated that fear and faith are not just different emotions; they are polar opposites that dictate our actions. Fear paralyzes. It makes us wait for things to happen *to* us, reducing us to passive observers. It whispers, "What if the worst happens?"

Faith, however, is active. It’s the divine assurance that even if the worst *did* happen, the solution—the strength, the words, the divine prompting—is already prepared. Faith empowers us to be proactive, to act with a positive, confident expectation of the Lord’s help.

As we continue to be Internet missionaries, we are constantly facing these little moments of fear: fear of rejection, fear of not knowing the right answer, or even fear of the unknown in our own lives. It’s in those moments that we must intentionally choose faith.

A Bite-Sized Mission Prep Skill: Identifying the Fear Trigger

Here’s a small skill I want us to practice this week as we prepare for our next assignment, whether that’s a full-time mission or just a challenging conversation in our own neighborhood. When you feel that knot of anxiety—that little flicker of fear—pause. Don't react immediately. Instead, ask yourself: “What specific thing am I afraid of right now?”

Is it the question? Is it the silence? Is it the concept of the Atonement? Naming the fear takes away some of its power. Once you name it, you can then pivot to the scripture, the testimony, or the principle that counters it. That’s where the Spirit leads.

Remember the words of Hebrews 10:38: "But my righteous one shall live by faith, and if he shrink back, I will be grieved." Being righteous isn't about never stumbling; it's about getting back up, dusting ourselves off, and choosing faith again.

Where Will You Choose Faith This Week?

My challenge to you, my fellow rogue disciples, is this: In what area of your life—your study, your family life, your temple attendance, or your outreach—will you consciously choose to reject the fear whispers and live by faith this week?

If you want to deepen this discussion, I highly recommend checking out the Book Club options in HolyPlaces. We’ve been diving deep into passages that tackle anxiety, and the fellowship there is truly strengthening. If you prefer a more structured, one-on-one approach to wrestling with tough questions, I encourage you to utilize Davee. He’s ready to walk you through the tough questions an investigator might ask, helping you sharpen your answers using the AI Investigator role.

Keep studying, keep testifying, and never let the fear of man diminish the power of the Spirit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Fear tends to condition us to think the worst will happen and can paralyze us. Faith, conversely, helps us see that we are not alone, and the Lord is with us, giving us the strength to act confidently.

The passage referenced was Proverbs 28:1, which states that the wicked flee when pursued, but the just stand secure as a lion.

Hebrews 10:38 is quoted, which teaches that the righteous person shall live by faith, and if they shrink back, the Lord will be grieved.
