When Life Feels Unfair: Finding Hope in God's Mercy

Sometimes the weight of the world feels too heavy. Let's dive into the beautiful, distinct attributes of God—justice, grace, and mercy—to find hope when we're hurting.

Brothers and sisters, if you've ever felt that crushing weight—the weight of the world, the weight of a personal struggle, the weight of just *being*—you know what I’m talking about. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed, to feel like you’re losing hope, and maybe even feel a little afraid or alone. It’s in those moments that we truly need to remember where our anchor lies.

I was recently reminded of the words of Jeremiah in Lamentations 3. If you’ve been feeling discouraged, if you’ve felt like life just isn't fair, know that you are not alone in that feeling. He cried out, and in his raw honesty, he said things that feel so real: “Life isn't fair,” and “I’m overwhelmed with anxiety and God doesn't seem to care.”

It takes courage to admit that to God, and to the Spirit. But what is the key that turns that lament into a declaration of hope? It’s remembering the attributes of God. It’s calling those truths to mind!

Justice, Grace, and Mercy: More Than Just Soupy Stew

The message really dove into how easy it is to treat God’s attributes like a giant, overlapping, goopy stew. Like, they are all true, yes, but they are also distinct in their function. To really build our foundation, I wanted to focus on three that are closely related but fundamentally different: Justice, Grace, and Mercy.

Justice: Getting What You Deserve

Justice, simply put, is getting what you deserve. We hear it all the time: “Let justice be served.” It’s the natural order of consequence. It’s fair, right? Until it comes down to us, I think we all feel that little flutter of anxiety.

Grace: Getting What You Don't Deserve

This is where the gospel shines! Grace is when you receive something you absolutely do not deserve. Think about it: Do we deserve salvation? No. But we are saved by grace. God gives us something undeserved, a gift that changes everything.

Mercy: Not Getting What You Deserve

And then there’s mercy. Mercy is when you *don't* get what you actually deserve. It’s the divine pause button on the natural consequence. It’s the understanding that while justice is necessary, God’s compassion is more immediate and more profound for us.

When we are hurting, when we are overwhelmed, we don't really want the cold calculation of justice. What we crave, what our souls yearn for, is mercy. It’s the reminder that His mercies never cease.

This whole discussion was a beautiful reminder that while we are all on this journey—whether you're in the MTC, serving in the field, or just navigating the day-to-day as a disciple anywhere—we can always anchor ourselves to the truth of His continuous goodness. His mercies begin afresh each morning.

If you’re wrestling with big questions about God’s nature, or if you’re feeling the strain of the world, I highly recommend taking some time to read Lamentations 3. It’s a powerful scripture for any of us feeling downcast.
