When 'Not Enough' is Exactly Where God Starts
Feeling overwhelmed by the weight of the world, or by personal struggles, remember that God's grace is sufficient right where you are.
Sometimes, the weight of the world—or even the weight of our own hearts—feels too heavy to bear. We scroll through the news, we look at our finances, we look at our health, and we feel this deep, gnawing ache: *I don't have enough.*
It’s a feeling that can grip you when you’re wrestling with the big questions: Will I be able to make it through next month? Will this anxiety ever lift? Will my family be safe?
I’ve been in those moments, brothers and sisters. Moments where the gap between what we need and what we feel we possess feels insurmountable. It’s easy to get caught in the 'what if' loop, letting the fear exaggerate what is real and overshadow the truth of the Gospel.
But I want to remind you of a profound truth that anchors us, a truth I’ve seen play out in the lives of faithful Saints, both in the field and right here in our homes: When you feel like you have nothing left, that is often precisely where the Spirit is ready to move.
I was studying the account of the widow of the prophet’s company. She was grieving, she was indebted, and she felt utterly depleted. Her husband, who served God faithfully, was gone, and now the creditors were coming for her sons. She had nothing. She felt the weight of her loss and the crushing weight of debt.
Yet, the narrative points us to a divine promise, a promise that echoes through every challenging season of our lives: When we are at the end of our strength, God’s grace is sufficient. In our weakness, His strength is made perfect.
This isn't a suggestion for a quick fix, or a three-step plan to make life easy. Life *is* complicated. The world is messy, and sometimes our personal battles feel overwhelming. But what the Spirit whispers to us, as we continue our study of Elisha, is that our starting point for relying on Him isn't when we feel strong, or when the crisis passes. It’s right in the 'not enough.' It’s in the admission of need.
As we continue to be Internet missionaries—whether we are in the MTC, in a local ward, or just sitting at our kitchen table—we must remember to practice that vulnerability. To admit, "I don't know how we're going to get through this."
If you are feeling that weight right now—the weight of the world, the weight of a personal struggle, the weight of uncertainty—I invite you to pause. Don't try to solve it all with your own strength. Instead, focus on that divine invitation: Empty ourselves and let God fill us.
This principle is vital for every disciple, whether you are preparing for your mission, serving as a returned missionary, or simply trying to live the Gospel day-to-day. It requires faith to trust the unseen hand of the Lord when all our visible resources are depleted.
If this message resonates with you, I encourage you to dive deeper into this concept. We have some excellent insights on this in the LivingBook through our Social Scripture Study layer. Alternatively, if you are looking for a place to process these deep spiritual questions with others, I highly recommend checking out a Book Club or a Bible Study Group in HolyPlaces.
