When Science Fails, the Spirit Speaks: Finding Miracles in the Work

I remember a time, years ago, when I felt completely overwhelmed. I was newly assigned to a field, and the sheer volume of names and conversations felt like a tidal wave. I kept thinking, “How am I going to do this? I’m just a young disciple. I don’t have the answers.” It felt less like a divine calling and more like an impossible task, a mountain I didn't know how to climb.

But lately, as I’ve been reflecting on the stories of divine intervention—the moments where human understanding completely breaks down—I’ve been thinking about what a 'miracle' truly means in the context of the missionary work. We often think of miracles in terms of healing or impossible feats, but I believe the greatest miracle is the Spirit’s ability to prompt us, to guide us, and to open the hearts of those who are lost.

The Miracle of the Witness

The transcript we watched recently speaks to a situation where modern medicine reached its limit. The doctors could not find a human explanation for what was happening. It was defined as "a miracle."

And friends, when we are out in the field, or even just chatting with a friend over video call as an Internet missionary, we are doing something similar. Sometimes, the investigator's questions are so deep, so fundamentally challenging, that they seem to defy all human logic. They ask, "If I just believe, is that enough?" or, "How do I know this is real?"

In those moments, our job isn't to present a textbook answer; it's to testify of the power that lies beyond the textbook. It's to share the story of the Atonement, the reality of the covenant path, and the undeniable truth of the living prophet. That is the divine intervention we are called to share. That is the miracle.

Mission Prep Skill: Listening for the Divine Pattern

If you are preparing for your mission, or if you are currently serving, I want to give you a small skill I’ve learned: When an investigator asks a question that makes you feel slightly panicked, or confused, do not rush to the answer you *think* they want to hear. Instead, pause. Take a deep breath and ask yourself: "What does the Spirit prompt me to say?"

“The Spirit doesn’t give you facts; it gives you conviction. It gives you the feeling of truth that settles deep in your bones, regardless of what the surrounding world says.”

This ability to discern the Spirit’s promptings, even when the pressure is on—that is the most powerful tool we have. It is our greatest divine resource.

Living the Disciple Life Anywhere

The wonderful thing about being a Latter-day Saint today is that we are not limited to a specific geographical assignment. Every member can be a disciple anywhere, all the time. If you are struggling to feel the Spirit, remember that the greatest way to receive guidance is to study and gather with fellow disciples. I highly recommend jumping into a Book Club or a Bible Study Group in HolyPlaces. It’s a fantastic way to deepen your understanding of the Book of Mormon and the doctrines of Christ.
