When Science Meets Scripture: Finding the True Source of Truth

From the deepest underground labs to the most advanced particle colliders, humanity is constantly trying to solve the universe's biggest puzzles. Whether it’s peering into the subatomic world at places like CERN, or mapping the furthest reaches of space, science is a breathtaking testament to what the Lord has gifted us with.

But as the source video touches on, this progress often comes packaged with deep, unsettling questions. Concerns about the 'Mark of the Beast,' the meaning of ancient symbols, or the very definition of 'God' in modern physics. When science and scripture collide, it’s natural for speculation, worry, and even fear to surface.

As a returned missionary, I’ve spent time in the field talking to people who are brilliant, highly educated, and deeply skeptical. They are often overwhelmed by the sheer volume of information—and the contradictory information—out there. They ask, “How can I know what is *actually* true?”

This is the core of the work. It's not about debunking every modern theory, nor is it about dismissing the power of scientific inquiry. It’s about pointing people—and ourselves—to the eternal, unchanging source of truth: the restored gospel of Jesus Christ. The scriptures are our compass, and the Spirit is our guide.

The Cornerstone of Truth: Genesis 1

When we encounter these big questions—about the origin of matter, the purpose of life, or the nature of a divine Creator—we must always pivot back to the foundational account. The scriptures teach us that the most reliable knowledge comes from the inspired record of creation. When we look at Genesis 1, we aren't just reading a nice story; we are seeing a pattern of divine authorship.

The Bible tells us that one day all people will know the truth about God. When we study the foundational chapters, we see that the focus is always on the source: God. The consistent, clear, and repeated testimony of a singular, uncreated God is the bedrock of our faith.

This principle applies to our daily lives as disciples. When a friend brings up a complex, modern philosophical question, our job isn't to give a lecture on particle physics. Our job is to gently guide them back to the bedrock: the reality of the Atonement and the power of the Book of Mormon. We need to be skilled at leading people to the source, not just giving them a list of facts.

Being an Internet Missionary of Discernment

How do we do this, especially when we are miles away from the nearest meetinghouse? We practice the missionary mindset: asking good questions and offering clear, gospel-centered answers.

I encourage you to use this week to hone a crucial skill: The Question Bridge. When someone asks you a difficult, secular question (about science, politics, or history), resist the urge to immediately give a theological answer. Instead, acknowledge their intelligence, validate their question, and then ask a clarifying question that gently guides them toward the spiritual implications. For example, if they ask, “What is the God particle?” you could respond, “That’s a profound question that shows how deeply you think about existence. What does that pursuit of knowledge ultimately reveal to you about *who* created the laws of physics in the first place?”

That pivot—from the mechanism (the particle) to the source (the Creator)—is the essence of the gospel. It reminds us that the ultimate mystery is not *how* the universe works, but *who* made it to work.
