When the Answers Don't Come: Wrestling with Unanswered Prayer

Have you ever had a question so hard you wouldn’t even say it out loud? Or a doubt so big that you felt you couldn't share it—especially not even in the quiet sanctity of a missionary discussion?

I know that feeling. I’ve been there, standing in the gap, heart poured out, believing with every fiber of my being that the Lord would move mountains, and sometimes… nothing seemed to happen. It can feel like a profound contradiction to the beautiful promise that with God, all things are possible.

We’ve all seen the miracles in the scriptures—Joshua stopping the sun, the fire for the prophets. We’ve prayed for our own friends, for our own families, and sometimes the outcome was heartbreakingly different from what we envisioned. It’s confusing. It makes you wonder: Is God listening? Did I do something wrong? Does He even care?

These are the questions that keep us up at night, the doubts that whisper when the Spirit is quiet. And honestly, these are the questions we need to tackle together, not in hushed whispers of fear, but out in the open, under the light of revelation.

The True Center of the Story

What I’ve learned, both in the field and now as a returned missionary studying these deep concepts, is that we often approach prayer with a subtle, self-centered assumption: that the universe, and Heavenly Father, exists primarily to serve *our* immediate desires. We treat Him like a vending machine—put in the right prayer, get out the desired snack.

But the gospel narrative, the story of the Plan of Salvation, tells a much grander story. We are not the main characters. God is. And understanding that shift in perspective—that we exist to serve and glorify Him—is the key that unlocks a deeper, more resilient faith.

The purpose of prayer, then, isn't to get God to bend to our will. It's about aligning our will with His. It’s about developing the intimacy that allows us to hear His voice even when the immediate answer isn't the one we expected.
