When the Answers Take Time: Keeping Faith in the Process of the Work
Feeling like your prayers are going unheard? This reminder about persistence, trusting the Lord's timing, and keeping the faith through every season of the work.
There are days when the field feels overwhelming. Maybe you’re knee-deep in missionary discussions, feeling like you’ve asked every question you know, but the investigator just seems to be moving through the motions. Maybe you’re studying for your mission interview, and the feeling of 'Am I ready?' is louder than the Spirit. Or maybe you’re simply trying to apply the gospel principles to a tough relationship at home, and the path forward feels shrouded in fog.
If you’ve ever felt that weight—that persistent, quiet feeling of being unanswered, or even forsaken—I want you to know that feeling is a normal part of the discipleship process. It doesn't mean the Lord is far away; it often means you are learning to trust Him in the unseen.
We often think of faith as a single, grand moment of revelation—a sudden flood of clarity. But what we learn from the returned missionaries and the saints who have lived the gospel is that faith is less about the *receiving* and more about the *keeping going*. It’s about the discipline of showing up, asking the right questions, and not giving up on the Lord, even when the answers are slow to come.
Ask, Seek, Knock: The Power of Persistence
The beautiful promise found in 3 Nephi 14:7—“Ask, and it shall be given unto you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.”
—is one of the most comforting scriptures we have. But the video we watched today, featuring Marcie’s story, reminds us of the critical nuance often missed: sometimes, the answer isn't instant. Sometimes, the answer is simply, “Wait, keep trusting.”
Marcie's experience is a powerful testament to the fact that the Lord was working, clearing paths and opening doors, even when the visible progress was agonizingly slow. She had to keep having faith, keep trusting that the Lord was aware of her and that He had not forsaken her.
This principle applies equally to our lives as Internet missionaries. When you are trying to teach the gospel to a friend who resists, or when you are studying the scriptures and the 'Aha!' moment never comes, the key is not to demand the answer, but to maintain the *process* of asking, seeking, and knocking.
🔥 Mission Prep Focus: The Power of Process
If you are preparing for the field, remember this: The goal of the *work* isn't just the conversion; it's the discipleship. If a missionary discussion feels like it's going nowhere, don't panic. Focus on the *process* of the discussion. Did you listen well? Did you ask a follow-up question based on their response? Did you teach them to find the scriptures themselves? Those small acts of diligence—the consistent, faithful process—are what build the disciple, regardless of the immediate result. That’s the work!
When You Feel Alone, Remember the Brethren
If you are feeling alone, or if your prayers feel unanswered, I want to gently redirect your focus. Don't focus on the size of the problem or the speed of the answer. Focus on the One who knows you intimately. The Lord is aware of you, and He loves you. He is always at work.
We are called to be Internet missionaries, disciples anywhere, all the time. If you feel like your efforts are scattered or disconnected, remember that you are connected to the greatest movement in history. You are connected to the Spirit, and you are connected to the covenants you have made.
A great way to keep the Spirit flowing and stay connected to the broader Body of Christ is by engaging in focused, structured study. I highly recommend checking out the Bible Study Groups and Book Clubs in HolyPlaces. It’s a wonderful way to deepen your understanding of the scriptures and connect with fellow disciples who are also learning to keep faith when the answers take time.
Your Next Steps on the Path
Don't let a period of slow progress derail your testimony. Keep seeking. Keep asking. Keep knocking.
For those of you who are ready to deepen your study of the foundational scriptures, I recommend revisiting the book of Alma. It's filled with powerful examples of discipleship and the unwavering faith required to endure. You can find plenty of excellent insights and related material through the Social Scripture Study layer in LivingBook.
If you want to talk through what it means to trust the Lord when things are uncertain, join us for our free weekly Disciple Challenge this Thursday. We'll be diving into the covenants and talking about how we can apply the power of persistent faith in our daily lives.
We are all disciples, and we are all learning to trust the Lord's timing. Keep going, brothers and sisters. The Lord is with you.
