When the Bait is Everywhere: Finding Purity in the Digital Wild

Sometimes, when you’re walking through the wilderness of life—whether it’s a tough week at work, a difficult family dynamic, or just the quiet moments before dawn—it feels like you’re wading through a mess too complicated to untangle. You look around, and the temptation seems to be everywhere, right there on the coffee table, plain view.

I remember a time when I felt exactly that way. I was a kid, excited, and suddenly, I was confronted with a sheer volume of things I knew I shouldn't see. The feeling—that initial buzz, that rush—was confusing, mixed with deep guilt and shame. It’s a feeling that can hit any of us, no matter how many times we’ve felt the warmth of the Spirit guiding us.

In fact, the reality of temptation today is more accessible, more constant, than it has ever been before. The good news, the wonderful, Spirit-filled truth we need to hold onto, is that it *is* possible. And it is God’s will for us. As we continue our journey through the teachings, we’re looking at the principle of 'Deep Clean'—a process of purifying our hearts and minds so we can truly love our Heavenly Father and our neighbors as He loves us.

When we look at scripture, we find guidance. James speaks clearly: “No one is tempted by man; for it cometh from man, but from the Lord. And no one is tempted by the world, but by his own lust.”

What the Savior taught us is that temptation doesn't come from God. It comes when we are lured away by our own desires, when we are 'baited.' Think of the Greek word used—it’s a fishing term, meaning to lure with bait. Our spiritual adversary knows our weak spots, our vulnerabilities, and he sets the trap.

But here is where the power of the Atonement and the constant companionship of the Spirit come in. We don't fight this battle in isolation. We remember that we have covenants, we have our families, and we have the incredible gift of the gospel. When we feel that lure, we must pause. We must ask ourselves, 'What is the bait here? What is the trap?'

For those of us who are newly called to the mission field, or those of us who are seasoned returned missionaries, this is vital. We need to be diligent in our mission prep. We need to build up our defenses through study and testimony.
