When the Burden Feels Too Heavy: Finding Your Conduit in the Spirit

If you feel inadequate in the field, remember that your job is not to carry the burden, but to be a conduit for the Spirit.

Man, we’ve all been there. You’re in the field, maybe you’ve just finished a tough missionary discussion, or maybe you’re just having a quiet moment of scripture study, and suddenly, the weight of it all crashes down. You feel inadequate. You feel like you’re not doing enough. You feel like you have to *be* the source of the blessing, the protector, the provider.

It’s a universal human burden, isn't it? The feeling that if *I* just try harder, if *I* just plan better, if *I* just carry more responsibility, then the outcome will finally be positive.

If you’ve ever felt that heavy, overwhelming sense of having to carry the weight of someone else’s eternal destiny, I want to share a truth I learned the hard way. It’s a truth that only comes when you realize that the magnificent plan of salvation isn't something we execute with our own strength; it’s something we are invited to be conduits for.

The Divine Shift: From Carrier to Conduit

I recently came across a thought that really hit me—a beautiful reminder that the ultimate provision, protection, and blessing do not originate with us. We are not the source; we are the channels. We are meant to be the pipes through which the Spirit flows from the Most High to the investigator, to the family, and to the Church.

When I was serving, I remember getting so fixated on the *mechanics* of the work. I thought if I just perfected my questions, or if I just planned the perfect lesson, I would somehow guarantee the outcome. I was trying to be the source of the blessing. I was trying to carry the load. I was trying to be the ‘provision’ for the record.

We are not meant to carry the burden of others. Our divine assignment is simply to be faithful, to be loving, and to create the space—the sacred, quiet space—where the Spirit can do the heavy lifting.

How to Let Go and Trust the Flow

This isn't just spiritual theory; it's practical missionary preparation. When you feel that familiar wave of inadequacy, pause. Take a deep breath and ask yourself: “What am I trying to carry that belongs to the Father?”

Sometimes, the hardest thing to do in the field is to let go of the script. It means accepting that the Holy Ghost—the Spirit—is the ultimate teacher, and that your job is just to open the door and invite the Spirit to speak. It means trusting that even if your efforts feel minimal, they are perfectly placed in the grand, eternal pattern of the Lord.

If you are a pre-missionary, this is the most important lesson you can learn in MTC: it’s not about being the best speaker; it’s about being the most attentive disciple.

Your Next Step in Discipleship

If this concept of being a conduit resonates with you, I highly recommend exploring the writings of Robert Sprague. He writes beautifully about the subtle, consistent power of the Spirit. Check out an Iron Rod article on how the Spirit guides us when we feel overwhelmed.
