When the Conversation Gets Sticky: Keeping the Focus on the King

There are times, whether you’re sitting across the table from an investigator, or even just having a casual conversation with a friend, when the conversation gets sticky. People feel deeply invested in specific theological points—end-times cycles, specific definitions, or intricate arguments about historical texts. And while it’s natural to want to provide the most comprehensive, perfectly worded, apologetic answer, we need to remember the primary objective of the work.

We are not running a seminary debate; we are sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Our goal is not to win an argument; it is to introduce people to the King.

The Mandate to Preach My Gospel

I was recently reviewing some notes on missionary preparation, and a thought struck me. We spend so much time in MTC and in our initial training focusing on the 'what'—what doctrines, what history, what scriptures. But the biggest takeaway, the most vital skill we need to master as returned missionaries and lifelong disciples, is the 'where.' Where does every single conversation, every single effort, point?

The transcript I watched recently highlighted this perfectly. Someone asked about a specific, highly technical word—a word that, while interesting, was pulling the focus away from the central narrative. The speaker’s gentle reminder was profound: the core of the Bible, the totality of the inspired record, is an introduction to who Jesus is, what He did, and what He will do. It’s not a collection of isolated points waiting to be argued.

This is the ultimate lesson in the field: When an investigator starts getting bogged down in the minutiae of a doctrinal point, when they start treating the scriptures like a legal codebook to be dissected, our job is to be the Spirit-led redirector. We must gently guide them back to the core narrative: the Atonement.

It's not about winning end-times arguments. It's about knowing the King. ✝️

As disciples, we are called to be both investigators and instructors. We are taught to be deeply knowledgeable, yes, but we must also be profoundly humble. Sometimes, the most Christlike thing we can do is simply pause, smile, and say, 'That's an interesting point, but what this really points back to is the Savior.' We let the Spirit do the heavy lifting, rather than relying on a perfect citation.

This concept is something I’ve been discussing with Davee lately. The goal isn't a flawless answer; the goal is conversion.

Finding the Center of the Spirit

How do we practice this in our daily lives? Every time we open up a Bible study, whether it's a Book Club in HolyPlaces or a casual Bible Study Group with friends, let's ask ourselves: 'Who is the focus?' If the answer is 'the argument,' we need to adjust. If the answer is 'Jesus Christ,' we are doing the work correctly.

Remember that every member can be an Internet missionary, every member can be a disciple anywhere, all the time. Our mission field is the world, but our focus must always be on the greatest missionary of all time.

Practical Disciple Challenge: Redirecting the Conversation

This week, I challenge you to identify one potential "sticky" topic you might encounter—a complex doctrine, a historical debate, or a difficult scripture. Then, practice a gentle redirect. Don't try to answer the technical question; instead, find the passage or the principle that shows how that topic ultimately points back to the Savior. Let the Spirit guide your pivot.
