When the Curtain Lifts: Understanding the Full Scope of Accountability

Sometimes, when we’re deep in study—maybe working through a Book Club assignment or just wrestling with a difficult scripture passage—we get fixated on the personal testaments. We talk about our own covenants, our own struggles, and how the Spirit has helped us move forward. And rightly so! We are called to be disciples, and that means constant self-assessment.

But what happens when we move beyond the personal covenant and look at the grand sweep of eternity? What does the process of ultimate accountability look like? It’s a topic that can feel heavy, but I want to approach it with the same blend of humility and earnest curiosity that I bring to every missionary discussion.

Recently, I watched a presentation that really shifted my perspective on this. We tend to focus on the "four last things"—Death, Judgment, Heaven, and Hell. And while those are vital topics for any Latter-day Saint, the speaker brought up something deeper: the Final Judgment itself.

The Truth Laid Bare: More Than Just Our Own Scorecard

The concept that everything—every choice, every moment of strength, every slip of the tongue—will be known in the presence of Christ, who is Truth itself, is staggering. It’s not just about a tally sheet of good versus bad. It’s about *understanding* the whole story.

I was struck by the idea that in that ultimate accounting, there will be no room for shame, and no room for pride. Think about that for a moment. Pride thrives in the shadows, in the things we curate for others to see. It’s the performance. But when the light of Christ shines, the performance ends.

This isn't meant to scare us into paralysis; it’s meant to liberate us into radical honesty. It’s a profound assurance that our worth is not based on our ability to *hide* our weaknesses, but on the grace extended to us *despite* them.

A Perspective for the Disciple

As we navigate the day-to-day work of discipleship—whether we are in the MTC, serving in the field, or even just having a quiet moment studying in our own homes—it’s easy to fall into the trap of self-promotion or, conversely, crippling self-condemnation. This teaching reminds us that the goal isn't perfection; it's alignment with the Savior.

The ultimate goal, the one that drives all our efforts to be Christlike, is to reach a place where our relationship with God is fully known, and that knowledge leads only to gratitude and love. It elevates our capacity for joy because we know exactly where we belong, by His grace.

It makes me think about how often we "pose" in our daily lives—trying to seem more knowledgeable, more spiritually mature, or more accomplished than we are. The Lord sees the heart, and the heart, when fully revealed, can only respond with "I know I belong here, by His grace."
