When the Details Get Fuzzy: Trusting the Unseen Plan

Have you ever been standing at a crossroads—a mission assignment, a challenging conversation with an investigator, or even just navigating a tough week—and felt that deep, gnawing whisper of, “Did I mess this up? Did I fail?”

It’s a feeling every single one of us who has served, or who is preparing to serve, knows too well. We pour our hearts into the work, we study until our eyes blur, and when the result isn't the immediate, perfect victory we envisioned, the doubt creeps in. We start questioning, “Why did the Lord send *me*? Why is this so hard?”

If you’ve ever felt like Moses questioning the Lord after a tough interaction with Pharaoh—feeling like you’ve made things worse instead of better—this message is for you. It’s a reminder that the Lord’s plan is infinitely larger, and sometimes, the withholding of details is the greatest gift.

The Purpose of the Unseen Details

We recently listened to a wonderful podcast episode discussing Moses’ struggles. The core takeaway that resonated deeply was this: The Lord loves to leave out details. And when we start asking, “Why?” we realize there are profound reasons behind that divine silence.

It’s easy, when we’re in the thick of the field, to focus only on the immediate task—the conversion, the revelation, the breakthrough. We see the obstacle, and we feel like the weak link. We think the task was supposed to be easier than it was.

Moses was not the reason the task failed. Moses was just under the impression that the task was supposed to be easier than it was. The Lord could have explained this in great detail ahead of time to spare Moses this despair. However, it would have negated His purposes of keeping Moses close. It had to be this way.

Think about that. If the Lord gave us a play-by-play of every challenge, every objection, every unexpected setback, would we truly connect our success back to Him? Or would we build up a fragile sense of self-reliance?

The purpose, my friends, is to force us to cling to Him. It’s a divine mechanism designed to keep our focus squarely on the Savior, not on our own perceived competence. It’s a beautiful, sometimes frustrating, spiritual workout.

When we feel like we’re stumbling, when we hit an unexpected roadblock—whether it’s a difficult family dynamic or a theological question from an investigator—our natural inclination is to despair, to try and fix it all on our own. But the Lord knows our propensity to wander. He knows our need to feel capable.

He allows us the struggle, not to condemn us, but to build something far more resilient: unwavering faith. He doesn't need us to be perfect; He just needs us to be willing. He needs us to keep coming back to Him, over and over.

Your Real Job: Willingness and Faith

If we take one thing away from this study, let it be this: Your job isn't to deliver the Israelites, or to have all the answers in a missionary discussion, or even to prevent every setback. Your job is to be willing. Your job is to give it your best shot, and then—crucially—look to Him with faith.

Faith changes our perspective. Obstacles, which feel like insurmountable walls when viewed through the lens of our own limited strength, look different when viewed through the lens of Christ. They become opportunities to deepen our reliance on the Atonement.

I testify that the Lord knows what He is doing when He calls you. He knows the details even when He doesn't share them immediately. He isn't mad when obstacles appear; He is simply inviting you to deepen your trust. He deserves our faith, and He is worthy of it.
