When the Door Closes, God Opens the Way: Trusting the Process of the Spirit
Sometimes the hardest 'no' in our lives is the greatest redirection toward the Savior's plan for us.
Friends, fellow disciples, if you’ve ever felt like you’ve hit a brick wall—a job loss, a relationship ending, a plan falling apart—I want you to take heart today. Because sometimes, the most painful detours are actually the Lord gently guiding us onto the path He prepared for us all along.
I was recently watching a powerful testimony about exactly that: a professional setback that led to professional blessings beyond measure. It’s a beautiful reminder that our earthly circumstances, no matter how restrictive they feel in the moment, are often just the raw material the Spirit uses to build something stronger and more aligned with our eternal purpose.
When we are deep in the process of missionary preparation, or even when we are serving full-time, we are constantly facing 'no's'—the investigator who says they need time, the assignment that changes, the study that feels overwhelming. It's easy to feel discouraged, to wonder if we aren't doing enough, or if we aren't 'good enough' for the work.
But what if the feeling of failure isn't failure at all? What if it’s just the Spirit gently nudging us away from a path that, while comfortable, wasn't *God's* path for us?
The Power of the Refusal: Standing Firm for the Gospel
The speaker in the video faced a situation where he was pressured to lie—to say someone wasn't in the room when he knew they were. His immediate, gut reaction, rooted in his faith, was to refuse. That refusal cost him his job. It was a tangible, immediate loss. It was the perfect picture of how keeping the covenant, how being utterly Christlike, can cost us things we value highly in the temporal world.
But look at the immediate aftermath! The loss forced him to start over. And out of that nothingness, a far better, more fulfilling opportunity presented itself—an opportunity that allowed him to do the very things he felt the Spirit compelled him to do: printing materials for the Church and leading youth activities.
This is the core message we need to carry with us as we continue the work: Don't grieve the loss; celebrate the redirection.
Sii Fedele Nelle Vie del Signore (Be Faithful in the Lord's Ways)
The scripture-discipleship we practice isn't just about memorizing verses; it's about applying the principles of faithfulness when the stakes are highest. When we are studying the Book of Mormon, or going through the deep discussions in the Social Scripture Study layer of LivingBook, we are essentially practicing this faith. We are learning to trust that even when the answer isn't immediately visible, the hand of the Lord is guiding us.
If you are feeling discouraged right now—if you feel like your current efforts aren't paying off, or if you've been passed over for an assignment—I encourage you to remember that testimony. The Lord knows the full picture. He knows the 14-month salary, the beautiful environment, and the calling that awaits, even if it’s hidden behind the temporary 'no' of today.
“Le circostanze più difficili delle nostre vite qualche volta servono per lanciarci nei nostri destini.”
My challenge to you this week, as we continue to be Internet missionaries wherever we are—whether it’s in a Book Club discussion, helping a friend with a tough question, or just sharing a kind word online—is to practice radical trust. When you feel the urge to complain about a setback, pause. Instead, whisper a prayer of trust, just like the speaker did: *“Signore, scelgo oggi di avere completamente fiducia in Te.”*
Remember, every member can be a disciple anywhere, all the time. Let’s commit to being faithful in the small moments, trusting that the Master Planner is working all things together for our ultimate good.
A Little Preparation Skill & Invitation
For those of us in the trenches of missionary prep, here’s a bite-sized skill: When an investigator asks a question that requires a deep doctrinal answer, don't feel the need to have the perfect, exhaustive response immediately. Instead, use the "bridge technique." Acknowledge the depth of the question, share a brief, heartfelt testimony related to the principle, and then say, "That's a question that deserves more study. I highly recommend looking into this topic in the scriptures, or maybe joining a Bible Study Group in HolyPlaces so we can dig into it together."
If you want to practice this—or just want to discuss how to answer those tough investigator questions—I invite you to join our next session with Davee! We’ll be focusing on the AI Investigator role next Tuesday. It’s a great, low-stakes way to sharpen those skills. You can sign up for more details via the link in our community feed!
