Brothers and sisters, if you’ve been in the field, you know that the word ‘missionary’ can conjure images of bright smiles, earnest conversations, and maybe a few well-placed scriptures. But the reality, the beautiful, messy, Spirit-filled reality, is that the field can look nothing like that. It can look chaotic. It can look scary. It can look utterly overwhelming.

I was recently watching a recording of a returned missionary sharing experiences from Portugal, and my heart sank a little, but in the best possible way. Hearing about the moments where the culture, the environment, and even people themselves seemed determined to test the very core of our discipleship—it’s a powerful reminder that the work doesn't always come wrapped in polite introductions.

The Spirit is Our Shield (and Sometimes Our Guide)

What struck me most wasn't the physical danger, though that was certainly present. It was the sheer *audacity* of the opposition. Being confronted, being mocked, being physically threatened—these are the moments where our natural human reactions take over. The instinct is to react, to fight back, to defend our beliefs with our own strength.

But the testimony of the returned missionary echoed a vital truth: sometimes, the most powerful response is the one that requires the most divine help. To ignore the taunts, to pull back from the physical confrontation, and to let the Spirit guide you to disengage rather than escalate—that takes a deep well of faith. It’s a constant battle to remember that we are not in this work by our own might.

Every Disciple is an Internet Missionary

This isn't just for those currently assigned to a mission, or even for those in the MTC. This is for us, right here, right now, wherever we are. Whether you are studying for your next missionary discussion, helping a friend with their Book Club reading, or just scrolling through LivingBook, you are in the field.
