When the Fire Comes: Finding the Spirit's Power in the Field

When Israel turned away from Yahweh, choosing the temporary worship of Baal, they were essentially choosing a false god—a god of convenience, or maybe a god of temporary feeling. But the truth is that the truth of the Gospel—the restored gospel of Jesus Christ—is the only power that truly revives. It’s the only power that can draw us back to the Father.

The beautiful thing about being a disciple—whether you are preparing for your first assignment, or you’ve been out in the field for years, or if you are simply studying the scriptures in your own living room—is that you are never alone in that confrontation. The Spirit is your companion. The Spirit is the power that allows you to speak the truth with both conviction and gentleness.

Practicing the Power of the Spirit: A Skill for Every Disciple

If Elijah’s story teaches us anything, it’s that we must be prepared to confront the status quo. Our role, as disciples anywhere, is to gently, lovingly, and persistently bring the light of the Gospel to those who have turned away. This is the heart of missionary preparation.
