When the Ideal Meets the Reality: Finding Strength in the Unforeseen

Have you ever seen a picture online—maybe of a beautiful home, or a perfect meal—and when you finally get there, the reality is... well, it’s different? It’s not *wrong*, but there’s a noticeable gap between the ideal and the actual?

That feeling of disappointment, that gap between what we *expect* and what the Spirit *brings* us, is something we all know. As we gather together as rogue disciples, we are constantly being shown the reality of the work—the real, beautiful, sometimes messy reality of the Savior’s plan. It’s not always as polished as the brochure.

Recently, I was studying Doctrine and Covenants 58-59, and it really struck me how often we are called to move from the 'ideal' testimony to the 'lived' testimony. The revelations given to the Saints in Missouri were powerful, but they were also rooted in real-life disappointments—disappointment in their circumstances, disappointment in the immediate path forward.

The Alpine Valley and the Salt Lake Desert

The speaker shared a beautiful account of his ancestors in Italy. They were following the guidance of the Spirit, moving through the Alps, when they expected one thing, and found something else entirely. Imagine being told, "Just around the next bend, you’ll see the valley that looks just like the Alps!" And then, when they rounded the corner, they saw the Great Salt Lake Valley—a desert that hadn't yet blossomed into the picture they were expecting.

It’s a profound reminder, isn't it? That the Spirit doesn't always give us a perfectly framed, postcard view of the next missionary discussion, or the next transfer assignment, or even the next revelation. Sometimes, we have to sprint up the mountain ourselves, ditch the group that’s following the expected path, and trust that the valley waiting around the corner is exactly what we need, even if it looks nothing like the picture we were shown.

Being Unshaken in the Field

This brings to mind the theme of being "Anxiously Engaged." It’s not just about knowing the doctrine; it’s about maintaining that deep, unwavering faith when the circumstances are confusing. The scriptures teach us that our testimonies must be as deep and as strong as Jacob's when confronted by doubt. We can’t let the 'ideal' narrative of our discipleship overshadow the grit and grace required in the *actual* field.
