When the Ledger Doesn't Add Up: Following the Unexplainable

Have you ever found yourself standing at a crossroads where all your carefully laid plans, all the numbers you’ve used to map out your future, suddenly feel… meaningless? Like the whole ledger of your life is showing a massive deficit that no amount of careful accounting can fix?

I remember a time when my own world was built on certainty. I was good at systems, at patterns, at making the numbers balance. I thought logic was the ultimate measure of reality. My life felt ordered, predictable, and safe within those neat columns of data. I was comfortable, successful, and frankly, I thought I had all the answers.

But then, you see something—a miracle, a moment of pure, unadulterated grace—that simply refuses to fit into any established formula. It’s an impossibility, and that impossibility starts to shake the very foundations of what you thought you knew.

The story of Matthew, as we see it unfolded, is the perfect illustration of this. He was an expert in the system—the tax collector, the keeper of the accounts. He was skilled, respected in his niche, but spiritually bankrupt. His world was defined by what could be counted, taxed, and recorded. Yet, when he witnessed what happened by the Sea of Galilee, when he saw the paralytic lowered from the roof, his reality fractured. The sheer *unreasonableness* of the divine intervention was more powerful than any earthly calculation.

It wasn't a gradual conversion; it was a complete paradigm shift. The moment Jesus looked at him and said, “Follow me,” it was an invitation to abandon the known for the utterly unknown. It was the ultimate risk, the greatest leap of faith.

The Call to Follow

Friends, this is the essence of being a disciple, whether you are preparing for your mission, serving as a returned missionary, or simply trying to live the gospel in your own backyard. We are constantly being called to follow something that doesn't make sense according to the world's metrics. We are called to follow the Spirit.

Sometimes, the call feels like a sudden, unexpected invitation—a chance to share the gospel with someone who seems completely closed off, or maybe it’s the quiet conviction to study a difficult passage of scripture when you’d rather be doing anything else. It requires leaving the safety of your 'tax collection' routine.

If you’re feeling that pull—that sense that your current routine isn't enough—I want to encourage you to lean into the process. Don't try to intellectualize away the feeling of the Spirit. Instead, bring it to the Book Club, or dive into a Bible Study Group in HolyPlaces. Let the structured study surrounding the Spirit do the heavy lifting for you.

Mission Prep Bite: Embracing the Unquantifiable

For those of us who are in mission preparation, remember this: When you are teaching a concept, don't just recite the doctrine. Instead, try to help your companion *feel* the contrast between the world’s logic and divine truth. Ask them, "What would your current understanding tell you to do here?" and then gently guide them to the Spirit's answer. That contrast is where the miracle happens.

We are all, in some way, called to be Internet missionaries—disciples anywhere, all the time. Don't wait for the official assignment to feel like you're doing the work. Start where you are.
