When the Path Isn't Clear: Trusting the Discernment of the Spirit

There are days, aren't there, when you feel like you've been walking in the light, sure of the direction, sure that this path—this career, this relationship, this calling—was exactly what the Lord wanted for you? You pour your heart into it, you feel the conviction, and then… it doesn't work out. Maybe you didn't get the job, or perhaps the people you were in discernment with said you couldn't continue. It's easy, in those moments, to second-guess everything, and sometimes, honestly, it’s even easy to feel frustrated with the process itself.

If you’ve ever felt that tug—that moment where the certainty you once held wavers—know that you are not alone. We all wrestle with vocational discernment, with the big choices that feel like they define our trajectory. As we continue to build up our lives as disciples, we are going to hit these crossroads. It’s part of the process of becoming more Christlike.

I recently watched a talk that really resonated with me, touching on this very tension: what do we do when the path we thought was God's perfect will doesn't pan out? It brought to mind so many of our own missionary discussions, the times we felt so sure about a particular area of the field, only to find the Lord was leading us somewhere else entirely. The core message, though, wasn't about having all the answers, but about *how* we process the uncertainty.

The Gift of Freedom and the Reality of Trials

One of the most powerful takeaways was recognizing the difference between the clear commandments—the things we *must* do, like keeping our covenants—and the areas where the Lord gives us latitude. He says, "Go ahead, choose." He gives us the freedom to choose our own path within His overarching will. And that freedom, while a gift, can be terrifying!

It’s so easy to fall into the trap of thinking: "If I just pick the *right* thing, everything will be smooth sailing." But the talk gently corrected that idea. God never promised a life free from trial just because we follow Him. In fact, the scriptures remind us otherwise. Following the Savior doesn't guarantee ease; it guarantees the Spirit's companionship, even through the valleys.

Our Discernment is Human

Perhaps the hardest part to accept is this: our discernment can be wrong. We can pray, we can talk to people, we can study the scriptures, and we can feel utterly convinced we are following the Spirit, only to realize later that our understanding was incomplete, or perhaps even flawed. This isn't a failure of faith; it's a testament to the complexity of the Spirit's guidance, which often works through our limited human capacity.

This is where we, as rogue disciples, need to lean hard into our preparation. We need to remember that being an internet missionary isn't just about posting good thoughts; it's about knowing *how* to talk about the plan of salvation when the questions get deep. It’s about knowing when to pause, when to study further, and when to simply testify of the Savior's goodness, even when our immediate circumstances feel confusing.

A Bite-Sized Mission-Prep Skill

When you feel that doubt creep in—that feeling that you might have made the "wrong choice"—don't let it paralyze you. Instead, pivot your focus immediately to the Savior. If you can't see the next step clearly, go back to the core doctrine. What is the most certain, unchanging truth you know about the Atonement of Jesus Christ? Spend five minutes reciting that truth, not as a recitation, but as a personal testimony. That anchors the Spirit when the worldly currents are strong.

My challenge to you this week is to practice this: When you feel uncertain about a decision, don't just ask, "What should I do?" Instead, ask, "What does the Spirit *feel* like when I focus only on the Savior's example?"
