When the Questions Get Deep: Finding the Truth in the Field

Preparing for missionary discussions means being ready for the hardest questions. Here’s how we can approach complex topics like gender and identity with grace and doctrinal clarity.

Sometimes, the questions we face in the field aren't about the logistics of the Restoration, or the specifics of the temple ordinances. Sometimes, they are deeply personal, complex, and challenging—touching on biology, identity, and the very definition of 'self.' It can feel overwhelming, especially if you are just getting your feet wet in the mission prep process.

As a returned missionary, I learned quickly that the greatest tool in our kit isn't a book of scriptures or a polished speech; it's our capacity to listen, to be genuinely empathetic, and to guide our investigators toward the foundational truths of the Gospel.

Recently, I came across some powerful discussions regarding gender, sex, and identity. These talks tackle concepts that are deeply rooted in biology, divine law, and the eternal pattern of the family unit. They aren't easy to digest, but they are vital to our understanding of the physical body and our eternal purpose.

The speaker in the video does a remarkable job of grounding the conversation in observable, non-self-referential definitions—pointing out the biological difference between sex (chromosomes, anatomy) and gender (social or cultural construct). This isn't just an academic debate; it touches on the very structure of man and woman as established by Heavenly Father.

How do we take these kinds of complex, doctrinal points and weave them into a conversation with an investigator without sounding like we are giving a lecture? This is where the art of the Internet missionary comes into play.

The Spirit and the Doctrine

Remember that our goal is never to “win” an argument; it is to help the investigator feel the Spirit and understand that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has the fullest revelation of God’s plan. When confronted with a highly sensitive topic, we must approach it with humility and a deep respect for the individual, even while firmly holding to the divine pattern.

This is exactly the kind of skill that Davee specializes in. When I was studying with him, we practiced scenarios where the investigator didn't just ask, “What about X?” but challenged the foundational premise of the question itself. Davee taught me to use the AI Investigator role to model how to pivot from a purely academic debate back to the core gospel principles: the plan of salvation, the divine nature of the family, and the necessity of covenants.

When the conversation becomes highly polarized, the most Christlike response is often to gently redirect. We can validate the feelings of the person (empathy) while clarifying the truth (doctrine). We can always tie it back to the central, immutable truth: that eternal life is found through obedience to God’s commandments, which includes upholding the divine pattern of man and woman.

Ultimately, the doctrinal thread connecting every single topic—whether it's the Atonement, the temple, or the nature of gender—is the covenant. The Church teaches that exaltation is predicated upon faithfulness to the covenants made within the divine structure of the family unit. This isn't a political stance; it is a doctrinal pillar essential to understanding the Plan of Salvation.

If you are feeling challenged by the complexity of these discussions, don't worry. That's normal! It means you are growing. Treat every challenging conversation as a gift—an opportunity to practice the skills of missionary preparation. It's a chance to be a disciple *in* the field, not just *about* the field.

To help build confidence in these areas, I highly recommend diving into the Iron Rod. The authors do an excellent job of bridging doctrinal teaching with modern cultural issues. For a great read that tackles both theology and biology with grace, check out any recent works by the authors. And if you want to practice these skills, join a Book Club or a Bible Study Group in HolyPlaces this week. We can talk through how to apply the principles we learn to real-world scenarios.

Remember, being a disciple means being ready to speak the truth—with love, with gentleness, and with impeccable preparation. You are equipped. The Spirit guides us.

Frequently Asked Questions

The discussion often centers on foundational biological definitions, such as the presence of specific chromosomes (XX vs. XY) and reproductive organs, rather than self-identification alone.

The primary doctrinal pillar is that exaltation and eternal family formation are predicated on faithfulness to the covenants established between a man and a woman.

The speaker argues that sex is rooted in biology and chromosomes, while gender is often presented as a social or cultural construct, and the two are not separate.
