When the Questions Get Tough: Defending the Gospel with Grace

Sometimes, whether in a formal missionary discussion or just over coffee with a friend, the questions we encounter feel less like genuine curiosity and more like calculated challenges. They can be designed to make us feel inadequate, to make us doubt the goodness of the gospel, or to make us feel like we have to debate the finer points of biology or philosophy until we are exhausted.

The videos circulating online, like the one we’re looking at today, can be jarring. They present confrontations that feel almost theatrical, where the goal seems less about understanding truth and more about 'winning' the argument. When we see these kinds of exchanges—where one person seems to collapse into disbelief when confronted with a complex, modern topic—it’s easy to feel defensive. It’s easy to think: *I must know the right answer.*

But as returned missionaries, and as disciples anywhere, all the time, we know better. The work isn't about having the perfect answer; it’s about having the Spirit. It’s about pointing the person to the source of all truth, which is Christ.

The Gospel Mandate: Grace Over Debate

When we are preparing for the field—or even just preparing for a tough chat with a neighbor—we need to remember the core principle taught in Preach My Gospel. Our goal is not to make the person admit they are wrong; our goal is to invite them to meet Jesus. When a conversation spirals into a highly technical, polarized debate—whether it's about gender, biology, or political theory—the best thing we can do is gently redirect.

We are called to be Christlike. And Christ was the master of redirection. He didn't get bogged down in the politics of the day; He taught the Father's kingdom. When you feel that familiar heat of defensiveness rising—the urge to counter-argue every single point—pause. Take a breath, and ask yourself: *What is the most eternal truth I can point to right now?*

This is where the power of the Spirit comes into play. It allows us to shift the focus from the *issue* (the uterus, the pronoun, the theory) to the *source* (the Atonement of Jesus Christ).

A Mission-Prep Skill: The Pivot

If you feel yourself getting drawn into a deeply divisive debate, practice the 'Pivot.' This is a skill I learned during my time in the MTC. It sounds simple, but it takes practice. When the conversation hits a wall of secular theory, don't jump over it. Instead, acknowledge the question, affirm the person's intelligence, and then pivot to an eternal principle.

1. **Acknowledge:** “That is a really complex topic, and I can see why it’s so confusing.”
2. **Affirm:** “I appreciate that you are thinking deeply about this.”
3. **Pivot:** “When I think about deep confusion and complex truths, what always brings clarity to me is the principle of the Plan of Salvation. It’s something I’d love to share with you, if you’re open to it.”

The pivot shifts the authority from the worldly debate back to the divine source.
