When the Road Takes Detours: Finding God's Timing in the Everyday Journey
Sometimes the most unexpected stops—whether it's a speed trap or a furniture delivery—are exactly where the Spirit needs us to be.
The modern road trip is rarely the straight, perfect line we map out on Google Earth. It’s a winding, detouring mess of spontaneous stops, unforeseen delays, and moments of pure, chaotic family life. We plan for the grand national park overnights, the ambitious thru-hike segments, and the perfect BLM camping spot, but life, like the road itself, always throws us a few curveballs.
Last week, the adventure felt like a perfect blend of chaos and comfort. We were dealing with everything from missing goats and unexpected roadside encounters to figuring out if a couch could fit perfectly in a tiny living room. It was a day of necessary detours. We were stopped, slowed, and reminded that the journey isn't just about the destination, but about who you are when the engine idles and the adventure stalls.
The Detour is the Destination
Whether we're navigating a crowded town center or deep in the backcountry, we quickly learn that 'on schedule' is a myth. We might get pulled over for a minor violation, or we might spend an hour arguing over the best shade of lemonade for a refreshment break. These unplanned moments—the ones that make us laugh, the ones that make us pause, the ones that require us to slow down and check our seats and our hearts—these are the HolyPlaces.
It reminds me that our faith journey, too, is full of detours. We might feel we are speeding through life, or perhaps we are struggling to keep track of something precious, like a lost goat or a forgotten promise. We are constantly being called to slow down, to look around, and to remember that the greatest gifts are often found right where we least expect them.
Slowing Down for Remembrance
The beauty of traveling with family, whether in a full-time RV, a Skoolie, or a minivan, is that every stop becomes a chance for intentional connection. When we take a break at a scenic overlook, we leave a little something behind—a painted rock from the CrockyGo collection. These aren't just pretty stones; they are little stones of remembrance, marking a moment of grace and inviting the next traveler to pause and reflect. They are silent prayers for fellow believers and travelers alike.
And when we stop at a local spot—maybe a bakery like Proof Breads, or a local gift shop—we don't just pay with plastic. We decorate a Currency Kids bill. Each decorated dollar is a small, traveling gospel tract, carrying a message of worth and hope with us across the state lines. Every little purchase becomes a quiet testimony that the world is better when we are intentional about the message we carry.
Planning the Next Gathering
The ultimate goal of the Rogue Adventurers isn't just to see the next trailhead or conquer the next bouldering route. It's to gather. To gather in the physical world, sharing a meal, a story, or a moment of quiet prayer. It's to gather in the knowledge of what is to come.
This week, I'm excited because our community is already planning a meet-up at a State Park near the mountains. We're combining a little bit of overlanding with some serious trail magic. If you're a family of believers, a van-lifer, or just someone who appreciates a good view and a deeper purpose, this is where we meet. It’s a field trip at scale—a chance to connect the practical journey of road school with the spiritual journey of knowing our hope.
Don't let your journey be a straight line. Embrace the detours. Plan your next adventure, claim a creator profile, or source an Adventure Angel guide to help you on the way. We are heading toward the HolyPlaces, together.
