When the Shaking Comes: Standing Firm in the Face of Mystery

The world can feel chaotic, full of unanswered questions. Let's anchor ourselves in the gospel and remember how to be disciples in any season.

Sometimes, you feel like you’re standing in the middle of a storm—a storm of headlines, cultural shifts, and big, unsettling questions. You look around, and everything seems to be changing, shaking, or transforming. It can feel like the world is whispering, “What is going on? What does it all mean?”

It’s easy, when the noise gets loud enough, to feel paralyzed. To want to tune out, to just keep our heads down and hope for the best. But as returned missionaries, and as disciples anywhere, all the time, we know better. We know that silence isn't always an option when the Spirit prompts us to speak.

Watching trailers like Jonathan Cahn’s on the harbingers of things to come can amplify that feeling. It speaks to that deep, ancient human mystery: What is behind the curtain? What are these forces transforming our culture and our civilization?

Finding Our Anchor in the Gospel

It’s natural to look for patterns, for grand explanations, for a single definitive answer to every troubling event—whether it’s a global event, a cultural shift, or even a personal struggle. We want the map, the timeline, the cheat sheet.

But my friends, the gospel of Jesus Christ isn't a science textbook or a political forecast. It is a covenant path. Our anchor isn't in predicting the next crisis; it’s in remembering the unchanging truths that have sustained us through every single trial—through the MTC, through tough callings, and through the quiet moments of deep study.

When the world screams with "What's next?" the gospel whispers, "What is true *now*?"

The Investigator's Mindset

This is where I keep thinking about Davee and his AI Investigator role. When an investigator asks a hard question—the one that makes you sweat a little, the one that challenges your assumptions—you can’t just recite doctrine. You have to meet them where they are, acknowledging the weight of their concern while gently guiding them back to the foundational promises of the restored gospel.

If the world is presenting a massive mystery, our response needs to be rooted in the Spirit, pointing always back to Christ. We can’t solve the mystery of American culture, but we *can* teach someone how to find peace in the Atonement.

A Bite-Sized Mission Prep Skill

Here’s a quick thought for our discipleship this week: When you find yourself feeling overwhelmed by world events, pause. Instead of researching the next global warning, take five minutes to review a core scripture passage—maybe Doctrine and Covenants 121:7-9, or even just the words of the Savior in the Book of Mormon. Focus on the *covenant* aspect. What did God promise *us*? That promise is our shield.

Remember, we are called to be disciples anywhere. Whether you are in a formal missionary discussion, leading a Book Club, or just having coffee with a neighbor, your job is to point to the Savior, not to predict the next upheaval.

Where to Connect Next

If you feel the weight of these big questions too, I encourage you to join a Bible Study Group in HolyPlaces. It’s a wonderful place to wrestle with scripture together, and the social scripture study layer in LivingBook lets us build on each other’s insights. Let’s keep building up our testimony together.

For those of us who are prepping or returning, keep leaning on our leaders, but never forget the power of personal study. Keep reading the Iron Rod authors, and let's keep sharing the light!
