When the Storm Hits: Drawing Strength from the Spirit in Our Weakness
Feeling overwhelmed by life's trials? Remember that the Spirit doesn't just guide us when things are easy; He is our strength when we feel weakest.
Sometimes, the weight of the world—or just a particularly challenging week in the field—can feel like a relentless storm. You feel the pressure building, the doubts creeping in, and you wonder, "How am I going to get through this?"
If you’ve been out in the field, or if you’re currently preparing for your mission, you know that life doesn't pause for our spiritual readiness. The challenges come when we are most vulnerable. It’s in those moments, when we feel utterly depleted, that we need to remember the profound truth taught in the Book of Mormon and echoed beautifully in the Book of Romans.
It’s easy to feel like we have to have it all figured out—the perfect testimony, the perfect answer for the investigator, the perfect schedule. But the gospel reminds us that we don't have to carry the weight alone. We have a divine Helper.
The Spirit: Our Strength in Weakness
One of the most comforting passages for any disciple, whether you’re in the MTC or years into your calling, is Romans 8:26. It says, “Likewise, the Spirit helpeth our weakness.”
Think about that for a moment. We *all* have weaknesses. We all stumble. We all face moments where our own understanding fails us, where the right words seem miles out of reach during a missionary discussion, or where the sheer magnitude of the work feels too big for one person to bear. The enemy loves to whisper into those gaps, convincing us that because we are imperfect, we are incapable of doing the work, or even worth the Savior's love.
But the Spirit doesn't wait for us to become perfect. He meets us *in* our weakness. He steps in where our natural strength fails. He helps us pray when we don't know what to ask for, guiding us to the right petition in the name of Jesus Christ.
Learning to Pray Through the Spirit
This leads us to another key point in that passage: the Spirit teaches us how to pray. It’s not about eloquent phrasing or perfect timing; it’s about alignment with the Father’s will, channeled through the Son. We are taught to pray not in our own names, but in the name of Jesus.
This principle is vital for every member who wants to be an internet missionary. When you feel stuck on how to approach a family or how to answer a tough question during a study group, don't rely solely on your own preparation. Instead, pause, remember the power of the Spirit, and ask Him to guide your words. Trust that He is working through you, even when you feel clumsy or inadequate.
More Than Conquerors
And if the storm continues? If the opposition seems overwhelming—be it doubt, discouragement, or real-world adversity—we look to the ultimate promise: “But in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.”
Friends, we are not defined by the storms we face, or the weaknesses we exhibit. We are defined by the Savior’s Atonement, which covers us completely. Nothing—no death, no life, no power—can separate us from the love of God, which is anchored in Christ. This truth should be the bedrock of your discipleship.
As we continue to learn and grow together, remember that every member can be a disciple anywhere, all the time. If you are looking for a place to deepen your study, I highly recommend checking out the Social Scripture Study layer in LivingBook, or joining a Book Club in HolyPlaces. Let's keep building up our testimonies together!
