When the Storm Hits: Finding Peace When You Don't Know Why
Sometimes life throws a storm at you when you least expect it. Drawing strength from scripture, we learn how to find peace even when we feel overwhelmed.
Brothers and sisters, have you ever felt like you were caught in a storm—one of those kinds that doesn't just rain, but feels like it’s trying to swamp the very boat you’re in? Maybe it’s a storm in your family, a storm in your calling, or maybe it’s just the deep, unsettling quiet after a big upheaval. You look around, and everything is chaotic, and the first thing that whispers in your ear is, “Does God even notice this?”
It’s a question every single one of us have wrestled with, especially when we are deep in the process of missionary preparation or when we’ve just returned and are trying to figure out how to apply the Spirit to our daily lives. We’ve studied the doctrines, we’ve read the scriptures, but when the actual *weather* of life hits, the theology can feel awfully thin.
The disciples on the Sea of Galilee knew this feeling. They were exhausted from a day of ministry, and Jesus said, “Let’s go over to the other side.” Sounds simple enough, right? Just a change of scenery. But what followed was a furious squall that nearly swamped them. And when the boat was rocking and the waves were breaking over them, one disciple woke Jesus up and asked, “Teacher, don't you care if we drowned?”
It’s easy for us to feel that same panic—that feeling of being overwhelmed by the unknown—and to wonder if our struggles are too big for the Savior to even see. But what the Savior showed them, and what we can learn today, is that His care is not conditional on the weather. His care is constant.
This message, “Finding Peace in Your Panic,” is a powerful reminder that even when we feel utterly swamped, the Lord has already planned the next step. Remember, the journey to find peace isn't about predicting the storm; it’s about learning to trust the Captain, even when the waves are cresting over the bow.
A Little Skill for the Field: Trusting the Direction
As we continue our discipleship, I want to pass along a small piece of mission-prep insight. When you’re studying for missionary discussions, or even just in your personal Bible Study Group, remember this: Don't just memorize the answers; internalize the *feeling* of the answer. When you feel the Spirit confirming a point, that’s the feeling of divine assurance. When you feel that doubt creep in—that’s normal! That’s just the storm gathering on the horizon. The key is to keep pointing back to the covenant path and trusting the guidance of the Spirit, just as the disciples eventually did.
We are all called to be internet missionaries, disciples anywhere, all the time. Sometimes that means sharing a scripture insight in a social scripture study feed, and sometimes it means simply being patient and praying for a companion who is struggling.
If you are wrestling with a question that feels too big, too messy, or too scary to bring to your Bishop or your District Leader, I encourage you to bring it to Davee. He’s been trained to walk through those hard questions an investigator might ask, helping you structure your answers with grace and clarity. He’s a wonderful resource for any missionary preparation questions!
We are building up the Saints, one disciple at a time. If you are feeling the weight of the world on your shoulders right now, please know you are not alone. We are here to lift you up.
For those who want to deepen their study of the Book of Mormon or the Plan of Salvation, I highly recommend checking out the latest reading available in LivingBook. It’s a wonderful place to anchor your faith when the waters get rough.
