When the Urge Is Too Strong: Finding the Way Out with Christ
Sometimes the temptation feels overwhelming, but remember that Jesus has walked through the hardest moments. Let's look at how to resist the pull and find the Spirit's strength.
Brothers and sisters, if you’ve ever found yourself standing at the edge of a precipice—that moment where the urge is so strong, so insistent, that you feel like you simply *have* to give in—you know the feeling. It’s the kind of weakness that whispers, “Just this once,” or “It won't hurt.”
It’s tempting to think that if the feeling is that powerful, God must not be listening, or that the standard is too high. But I want to remind you today of something vital: Jesus has been there. He knows what it’s like to be tempted to the absolute limit, and yet, He never sinned. That knowledge is a profound comfort for every disciple trying to keep the covenant.
The principle that anchors us, no matter what trial we face—whether it’s a difficult assignment in the field, a tough conversation with a ward member, or a personal struggle in the quiet of our own hearts—is that the Savior understands. He faced the most intense temptation anyone has ever known, and He overcame it through the Spirit.
Understanding the Process of Temptation
When we talk about temptation, we aren't talking about a single event; we’re talking about a process. Think of it like this, as we learned from the scriptures. It rarely starts with the act itself. It starts with a thought.
A thought creeps in. Then, the imagination takes over, building a little narrative around that thought. Next comes the justification—the little voice that whispers, “It’s okay this time,” or “Everyone else does it.” And finally, the choice.
This sequence is something we need to recognize, because recognizing the pattern is the first step toward breaking it. It’s not just the initial weakness; it’s the whole cycle that can pull us away from the will and purposes of Heavenly Father.
The Divine Out
But here is the good news, the gospel truth we cling to: God always gives us a way out. The Spirit is our guide, and Christ is our strength. When we feel that pull—that "I just can't resist"—we must remember that we don't have to fight that battle in our own strength.
This is where our commitment to continual discipleship shines. If you are feeling vulnerable to a pattern of sin, or if there is a weakness you know you need to overcome, I encourage you to treat this message through the lens of that specific struggle. What is the whisper? What is the promise of satisfaction at the cost of obedience? We need to bring those whispers into the light of the word.
Remember that every time we feel the urge, we have the power to pause. We can pause, and in that pause, we can ask for the Spirit’s help. We can turn to our scriptures, or we can seek counsel from our district leader, or we can simply kneel down and pray, asking Him to strengthen our will.
As we continue to build up our discipleship—whether through a focused Bible Study Group in HolyPlaces, or by diving deep into the teachings of the Iron Rod authors—we learn that the strength to resist isn't found in willpower alone. It's found in consistent, heartfelt reliance upon the Savior.
If you are ready to strengthen your resolve and learn more about keeping the covenant in the face of strong urges, I highly recommend spending some time with Davee. He’s excellent at walking you through those tough "what if" scenarios, helping you practice answering the hard questions before you even face them in the field. He can be a powerful companion in your missionary preparation!
What are you going to do today to strengthen your guard? I invite you to join a Book Club this week to discuss a passage that speaks to resisting temptation. Let’s build each other up together as we strive to be more Christlike disciples.
A Little Prep Skill: When a tempting thought arises, pause and immediately recite a short scripture verse aloud—something like Doctrine and Covenants 121:7. The physical act of speaking the truth can disrupt the pattern.
