When the Veil Thins: Finding Revelation in Life's Hardest Questions
Sometimes the greatest revelations don't come in quiet moments of study, but in the midst of our deepest trials. Here’s how we can turn our personal struggles into sacred opportunities in the work.
There are times in our journey that feel less like a gentle walk and more like navigating a sudden, unexpected storm. You might find yourself asking the big questions—the ones that keep you up at night, the ones that make you whisper, “Why?”
If you’re a pre-missionary feeling the weight of uncertainty, or a lifelong disciple facing a personal health crisis, or even a seasoned returned missionary grappling with doubt, you know that these moments can feel overwhelming. They can make us doubt the promises we’ve been taught, making us question the plan of salvation itself. It feels like the heavens are closed, doesn't it?
But I want to share a reminder, rooted in the testimony of the Lord and the experiences of our brothers and sisters: that the deepest, most challenging trials are often the very places where the Spirit is most powerfully present. They are opportunities—sacred opportunities—to deepen our roots and learn how to guide others through their own thinning of the veil.
Recently, I was moved by a powerful talk sharing a journey through a severe health diagnosis. It was a story of deep vulnerability and profound trust. It was a powerful reminder that while we cannot control the circumstances of our lives, we can control our response. We can choose to turn those struggles into sacred walks with God.
“Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” (Proverbs 3:5-6)
This scripture is the bedrock of discipleship. It’s not just a promise; it’s a directive. It tells us that even when our own understanding fails us, and even when the diagnosis is scary or the question is impossible to answer, we are meant to acknowledge Him. And when we do, the Lord promises direction, and often, revelation.
The Sacred Work of Questioning
The speaker in the video beautifully articulated that seeking revelation—whether it’s about a personal health crisis, or seeking to know who needs help on the other side of the veil—actually strengthens our capacity for personal revelation. The knowledge we gain about ourselves and our covenant path directly increases our ability to help our neighbors. The seeking for others becomes the seeking for us.
💡 Mission Prep Skill: Embracing the "Why"
This is a vital skill for every member and disciple. When you are in missionary discussions, or when you are studying with a friend in a Book Club, you will inevitably face the hard questions: “Why do I need to believe?” or “What if I’m wrong?”
Instead of getting defensive or giving a pre-canned answer, view that question as a divine gift. It means the Spirit is prompting the investigator to ask. This is where our friend Davee, our AI Investigator co-pilot, shines. Use him! He is trained to walk you through those hard questions, helping you shift the focus from defending the gospel to helping the investigator *discover* the gospel truth for themselves. It’s about guiding them to the light, not lecturing them from it.
Discipleship is Always in the Details
Whether you are a newly assigned missionary, a pre-missionary studying for your interviews, or a disciple finding comfort through a Bible Study Group, remember that the Lord is always at work in the details. The pattern set by the Prophet Joseph Smith—sincerely seeking personal revelation and following the counsel of the living prophets—shows us that the heavens are always open to those who are obedient and earnest.
If you are feeling stuck, remember the power of gathering. The process of gathering Israel, and the ongoing work of building Zion, is not just for the assigned missionaries. It is a collective, eternal effort that requires every single member to be an Internet missionary, a disciple anywhere, all the time.
