When the Whispers of Fear Try to Steal Your Testimony
Feeling anxious about the next step in the work? Remember that the antidote to fear isn't logic—it's faith, built on knowing God's unconditional love.
Brothers and sisters, if you’ve ever felt that creeping sense of dread—the kind that whispers, *“Nothing good ever happens to you,”* or *“You’re not ready for this,”*—you know the feeling. It’s the enemy’s favorite tactic, isn't it? It tries to build a wall of doubt right where the Spirit is trying to build a bridge of confidence.
As we continue to gather Israel, whether we are in the MTC, out in the field, or right here in our living rooms serving as internet missionaries, we are constantly facing challenges. Sometimes those challenges look like a difficult teaching moment, a tough family conversation, or just the sheer weight of knowing the work is eternal. It’s easy to let the anxiety of what *might* happen derail the joy of what *is*.
The message I was reflecting on recently—and it resonated so deeply with the principles of Preach My Gospel—is that the antidote to fear isn't a self-help trick or a perfect plan. It’s something far more powerful: it’s faith, rooted in the knowledge that we are unconditionally loved by our Heavenly Father.
The Unconditional Nature of Love
We often treat love like a transaction. We think, "If I just *act* perfectly, if I just *study* enough, if I just *don't* mess up," then we will earn the right to feel secure. But the Savior taught us something profound: God’s love isn't conditional on our performance. He sent His Son for us while we were still His enemies. Think about that for a moment. That's the standard we are called to live by—a standard of grace.
When we feel that anxiety creeping in, remember that the feeling itself isn't the problem; it's a signal. It's a sign that the adversary is trying to pull us away from the blessings God has prepared for us. We must learn to distinguish between a genuine feeling of fear and the subtle whisper of doubt.
This brings me to a practical skill I want to share with you all, something that helps me when I feel my own confidence wavering. It’s about our words. As the scriptures teach, our tongue has the power to either give life or take it away. When we are preparing for missionary discussions, or even just having a quiet moment of reflection, we have to be intentional about what we are saying—both out loud and in our hearts.
Instead of letting the fear whisper, "Nothing good ever happens to me," we need to actively replace it. We need to say, "I believe that I *will* see how good God is while I live." It’s an act of faith declaration!
This isn't just theory, though. Faith, as we know, must be *activated*. It's not a passive feeling; it's a muscle we have to exercise. And how do we exercise it? The speaker highlighted three key actions: Praying, Speaking, and Doing. These are the pillars that help us move from feeling anxious to feeling empowered.
Putting Faith into Action
When you feel that anxiety building up—maybe you’re facing a difficult topic in your Book Club, or perhaps you’re just trying to keep your own testimony steady—I encourage you to use these three anchors. Praying helps us connect to the Spirit; speaking helps us declare truth; and acting helps us prove it to ourselves.
If you want to deepen this practice, I highly recommend revisiting the teachings on faith found in the Iron Rod. It’s a powerful reminder that we are always being guided toward greater discipleship.
For those of you who are feeling the pull toward the full-time work, or those of you who are just trying to strengthen your personal discipleship right where you are, remember: every member can be an Internet missionary, every member can be a disciple anywhere, all the time.
If this message resonated with you, I invite you to join us for our weekly Disciple Challenge this week! It’s a low-pressure way to practice declaring faith in our daily lives.
