When the Wild Calls: Finding Sanctuary on the Road Adventure

Sometimes the greatest adventures are the ones that throw the map out the window. Join us as we reflect on unexpected encounters in the wild, reminding us that the journey itself is where the HolyPlace awaits.

The best kind of adventure is the one you don't plan. It's the spontaneous detour, the unexpected stretch of dirt road, or the moment you pull over at a random overlook just because the view demands it. It’s the kind of journey that throws your carefully curated itinerary out the window and forces you to simply *be* in the moment.

Recently, we watched footage from Central Florida—a whirlwind of unexpected encounters, from dense jungle paths and surprising wildlife to a dramatic sky show. What started as a simple road trip through a region unknown quickly became a vivid reminder of the powerful, wild, and beautiful world we are called to explore. It was a powerful lesson in how quickly the natural world can surprise us, and how quickly we find our true center when we pause to observe it.

If you’ve been planning a big family trip—whether it’s an overlanding trek through the Utah BLM lands or a world-schooling road school adventure through the Mid-Atlantic—you know this feeling. You pack the Skoolie, you check the route-finding maps, but nothing truly prepares you for the sheer, unbridled wildness of a place like this.

The Unexpected Wilderness Encounter

The video captures the wildness perfectly. Picture this: walking through what seems like a normal street, only to suddenly find yourself surrounded by at least 30 snakes, crawling in a dense, jungle-like environment. Our immediate, instinctual response is to back up, to retreat, to the relative safety of the vehicle. It’s a stark reminder of how powerful and untamed nature can be, demanding respect and a healthy dose of caution.

Later, the scene shifts to an overlook—a spot that, while perhaps not a mountain by definition, offers a sweeping, breathtaking view. And then, the wildlife show begins: a magnificent eagle swooping down to catch a cat. It’s raw, dramatic, and completely outside of our control. These moments are breathtaking, reminding us that creation is vast, powerful, and utterly magnificent.

Finding the HolyPlace in the Moment

For us, the Rogue Adventurers, these spontaneous moments of awe aren't just about documenting cool wildlife videos; they are opportunities for reflection. The wildness of the jungle, the power of the sky, and the sheer complexity of life in nature all point toward a Creator who is infinitely powerful and eternally present. We are constantly reminded that no matter how far we roam—whether we are bouldering in the backcountry or parked at a state park campsite—we are always traveling toward a Gathering.

It’s in these moments that the community becomes our anchor. If we were in a field-trip-at-scale setting—say, a group of homeschool co-ops exploring a natural history museum, or a climbing meet-up at the Grand Tetons—the shared experience amplifies the sense of belonging. These are the HolyPlaces. They are the places where we gather, where we point our eyes upward, and where we share the hope of what is to come.

Packing the Essentials for the Journey

To help anchor our journey and remember the people we meet along the way, we carry a few tools. When we stop at a trailhead or a rest stop, we might leave behind a CrockyGo painted rock—a small stone of remembrance for a stranger, a sign that we were here and we are thinking of the community. And when we stop at a local favorite—a bakery like Proof Breads, or a gift shop—we spend our days with decorated Currency Kids bills. Every dollar spent at a Holy Rogue Network vendor is a little gospel tract, a small piece of the light traveling with us on the road.

This is the convergence point: the shared love of adventure brings together the RV families, the climbers, the world-schoolers, and the seekers. We are all looking at the same horizon, preparing for the same thing: coming home.

Where Will Your Next Adventure Take You?

Don't let your next journey be defined by the gas tank or the mileage limit. Let it be defined by the calling to explore, to gather, and to witness the majesty of creation. Whether you're planning a multi-day backpacking trip or just a weekend visit to a nearby state park, look for the spontaneous moment, the wild encounter, or the perfect view.

Ready to make your next field trip a part of the movement? Find a local meet-up, list a field trip at a place of beauty, or claim a creator profile to share your own adventures. Let’s keep this road of adventure moving toward the Gathering.
