When the World Burns: Finding Calm in the Chaos of the Spirit

Sometimes, the world throws curveballs at us—big, unexpected, and sometimes scary. You hear about things on the news, or maybe you’re just scrolling through your feed, and suddenly, the alerts start popping up. Fire alerts. Emergency warnings. It can feel overwhelming, can't it?

I was reflecting the other day on a friend’s story—a story that reminded me so much of the times when the 'field' feels chaotic, when the challenges seem too big to manage, and when the natural world around us feels out of control. She recounted a terrifying experience involving a real-life fire, a moment where everything—the routine, the comfort, the predictability—was stripped away by the immediate need to evacuate.

It got me thinking about what anchors us when the 'fire' starts. When we're out in the field, or even just doing our daily lives as disciples, we sometimes face spiritual 'fires'—hard questions, deep doubts, or cultural pressures that feel all-consuming. In those moments, where do we anchor?

I was so grateful to hear her mention that even in the middle of that chaos, she was praying. And she said, "God answered my prayers."

It’s a powerful reminder, isn't it? That no matter how intense the external circumstances—whether it’s a wildfire or a difficult missionary discussion—our first instinct, and ultimately our greatest resource, must be our connection to the Savior. As we continue our journey as rogue disciples, we are called to be internet missionaries everywhere, all the time. Sometimes that means being the calm voice when others are panicked.
