When the World Feels Unraveling: Finding Peace in the Uncontrollable
Sometimes life throws us curveballs—trials we simply cannot control. This story reminds us where to anchor our hope: in the Savior.
There are days, I think, when the very ground beneath your feet feels unsteady. Days when the diagnoses come, when the unexpected crises strike, and when the sheer weight of uncertainty threatens to pull the breath right out of you. It feels like the world has suddenly lost its steady rhythm, doesn't it?
I was recently moved by a testimony shared by a brother who recounted a time when his mother was diagnosed with Stage Four cancer. Hearing his story was a powerful reminder that life, even in its most mundane moments, can pivot on a single, terrifying day. It’s a stark reminder that our control is so incredibly limited.
We all face moments where the script changes without warning. We watch loved ones struggle, we face personal health scares, or we see friends navigate deep valleys of worry. In those moments, the natural instinct is to try and *fix* it, to gather all the answers, to control the outcome. But as this testimony beautifully illustrated, sometimes the only thing left to do is something far more profound: to turn wholly to the Savior.
The Anchor in the Storm
The brother shared how, after the difficult conversations and the goodbyes, the peace didn't come from having all the answers, or from the situation improving. It came from a shift in focus. His mother’s final words, "no empty chairs," weren't just about heaven; they were a powerful testament to the enduring power of family, faith, and the covenant path.
It hit him—and it hit me—that the peace wasn't in the *absence* of struggle, but in the *presence* of the Savior. When we can't control the illness, the loss, or the unpredictable turns of life, we can control where we place our trust. We can choose to rely on Him.
This is the core of the gospel, isn't it? That while we are called to be diligent disciples—to study, to serve, to keep our covenants—there will always be moments that require us to simply kneel down and whisper, "I don't know what's next, but I know Who is with me."
A Bite-Sized Skill for the Field
As we continue our journey as rogue disciples—as internet missionaries everywhere—we are constantly being asked to minister in areas where we feel unprepared. When you find yourself in a conversation, whether online or in person, and you are met with a question you genuinely don't know the answer to, remember this: It is okay to pause. It is powerful to say, "That is a deep question, and I want to give you a thoughtful answer. Let me look into that scripture/resource, and I will get back to you."
This isn't admitting defeat; it's modeling the *process* of discipleship. It shows the investigator that the truth is worth seeking, and that we are committed to doing the work diligently. We are always learning, always gathering knowledge, always relying on the Spirit and the teachings of the Iron Rod.
I encourage you all to take some time this week to reflect on a time when you felt utterly helpless. What brought the peace? Was it a scripture passage? Was it a conversation with a friend? Was it simply the quiet certainty of the Atonement?
If you want to dig deeper into how to navigate those tough conversations, I highly recommend checking out Davee. He’s been working through some excellent scenarios lately, especially regarding the nuances of doubt. It’s a great refresher for any of us preparing for missionary discussions, even if we are just having a casual chat with a neighbor!
Remember, we are called to be disciples everywhere, all the time. Let’s keep leaning into the Spirit together.
