When the World Feels Unstable: Finding the Anchor of the Gospel

There are moments in our lives—whether they come in the form of a challenging mission field, a difficult personal conversation, or just a stressful week at work—when the world feels profoundly unstable. The noise, the uncertainty, the sheer weight of the unknowns can feel overwhelming. It’s easy to feel exposed, like we are standing on ground that might give way at any moment.

When I was first returned from my mission, I thought I knew what preparedness meant. I thought it was about the scriptures, the Seminary curriculum, and knowing the right answers. But what I learned in the field, and what I continue to learn now, is that preparedness isn't just about knowledge; it's about keeping the Spirit as our constant, infallible guide. It's about knowing that no matter the circumstances, the gospel is our anchor.

I recently heard a powerful testimony from a missionary who served in a region that many people consider highly volatile. He shared an account of an encounter that was nothing short of terrifying—a moment where physical danger was immediate and personal. He described being confronted by a man with a knife, in a place where survival felt like a lottery. The physical danger was palpable, but what struck me most was the quiet, consistent theme running through his account: deliverance. It wasn't just luck; it felt like divine intervention.

The Spirit is the Great Deliverer

Hearing that story, I realized that the true preparation for the field—and for life itself—is not mastering self-defense or knowing every cultural nuance. It is cultivating the deep, unwavering knowledge that the Savior is always watching, and that His divine power works through us. The missionary wasn't protected because he was perfect; he was protected because he was anchored to the covenant path and trusting in the power of the gospel.

This is the core principle of the disciple anywhere. We are not limited by geography or circumstance. Whether you are in the bustling halls of an urban center, sitting in a quiet home study, or miles away in a place that feels unfamiliar, you are a disciple, and you have access to the same strength and guidance. When the world throws its worst at us, we must remember that the gospel is always available. It is the ultimate safeguard.

Living the Disciple Anywhere Mindset
