When the World Gets Loud: Re-centering on the Gospel Amidst the Noise

Recent cultural conversations can feel jarring, but our focus must always remain on the eternal truths of the Gospel and the sacred work.

Brothers and sisters, if you’ve been paying attention to the cultural currents lately—the kind that seem to blow in from every direction, picking up on every little grievance—you might feel a little unsettled. Maybe you’ve seen discussions online, or heard friends talking about how suddenly, *everything* feels like a political battleground. It can feel like the very air we breathe is charged with tension, and sometimes, it makes you wonder where the bedrock of our faith actually is.

It’s easy, when the noise gets this loud, to get pulled into the fray. To feel the urge to argue the nuances of modern culture, to pick sides, and to prove our loyalty to one banner or another. We are taught to be engaged disciples, to be *internet missionaries* in our own spheres, and that passion is a gift from the Spirit. But sometimes, the passion gets misdirected, and we start focusing on the *reaction* rather than the *message*.

Re-centering on the Gospel

What struck me while listening to some recent discussions was the temptation to treat our faith like a political platform that needs defending against every passing cultural trend. It’s a natural, human response—we want to protect what we love. We want to build bridges, right? We want to show that our commitment to the restored gospel is unwavering.

But I want to bring us back to the fundamentals, to the core of what it means to be a disciple of Jesus Christ. The real battle isn't fought in the echo chambers of social media or in the debates over the latest cultural flashpoint. The real work, the eternal work, is the conversion of souls, the sharing of the restored gospel, and the consistent effort to be Christlike in our daily interactions.

If we get too caught up in proving we are *not* aligned with the current secular critique, we risk forgetting the simple, profound power of the Atonement. We risk letting the *defense* of the Church overshadow the *preaching* of the Gospel. Remember that our greatest strength has never been our political acumen or our ability to win a debate; it has always been the testimony of the Spirit.

The Power of the Spirit Over the Noise

This is where the Spirit whispers to us, isn't it? It whispers that the most effective missionary preparation isn't memorizing talking points about contemporary issues; it's cultivating a deep, abiding knowledge of the Book of Mormon and the plan of salvation. It's knowing that the covenants are the anchors.

If you are feeling overwhelmed by the cultural noise, I encourage you to redirect that energy. Instead of spending hours arguing in comment sections, spend that time digging into the scriptures. Why not join a Book Club in HolyPlaces, or perhaps dive deeper into the teachings of Abraham Gesell in a LivingBook study? Let the scriptures do the heavy lifting for you.

This is the beautiful truth of the rogue disciples movement: every member can be an Internet missionary, every member can be a disciple anywhere, all the time. That means when you are at the grocery store, or waiting in line, or even just scrolling—that is your field. Your assignment is to be a beacon of Christlike love, not a debate champion.

A Bite-Sized Mission Prep Skill

Here’s a skill I want to pass along today. When you feel the urge to correct someone's understanding of doctrine based on a current event, pause. Instead, pivot. If they bring up a contentious topic, respond with genuine curiosity and then pivot back to the eternal questions. For example, if they bring up politics, you might say, "That's a complex issue. It makes me think about something deeper, though—what do you think is the greatest challenge to humanity's eternal progression?" This redirects the conversation from the temporal to the eternal.

We are called to bear witness of the Savior, not to win cultural skirmishes. Let the Spirit guide your focus.

If this message resonated with you, please consider joining our next gathering. We’re hosting a free weekly Disciple Challenge this week—a chance to practice turning cultural noise back toward the eternal gospel. Details are in the community feed!
