When the World's Wisdom Meets the Gospel: Finding Our Focus

Brothers and sisters, sometimes you see something online—a cultural moment, a popular piece of media, or even a snippet from a speaker who is well-meaning but whose message misses the mark. It can feel like the world is constantly trying to give us an alternative gospel, a self-contained system of truth that doesn't require the Savior.

It can be jarring, right? Like tuning a radio dial and landing on static, or worse, a frequency that sounds *almost* right, but is fundamentally off-key. We’ve all been there, haven't we? Maybe you’re in a missionary discussion, or perhaps you’re studying with your companions in a Book Club, and a question comes up that forces you to pause and really consider the foundation of our belief.

Seeing content like this—where the premise seems to be, “If I made this, you *have* to listen to the Bible in ear”—it hits home. It speaks to the core principle of our discipleship: that the restored gospel isn't just one opinion among many; it is the singular, revealed truth found in the Book of Mormon, the Bible, and the teachings of modern revelation.

As we continue in the work, whether we are in the MTC, serving in the field, or right here at home as Internet missionaries, we need to be crystal clear on our testimony. We need to be prepared to gently, lovingly, but firmly redirect conversations back to the covenants we have made and the Atonement of Jesus Christ.

Re-Centering on the Savior

This isn't about being defensive; it’s about being disciples. It’s about having the Spirit guide our conversations so that when we are asked a tough question—the kind that makes you pause and think, “How do I answer this without sounding academic?”—we can draw upon the deep well of scripture study.

This is where the power of preparation comes in. When I was first learning to navigate those difficult missionary discussions, I felt overwhelmed. I worried I didn't have enough 'answers.' But what I learned, and what I want to pass along to the next wave of disciples, is that the answer isn't in memorizing talking points; it's in knowing *where* to find the truth. It’s in knowing the scriptures, knowing the principles, and trusting the Spirit to guide your words.

Mission Prep Skill: The Gentle Redirect

Here’s a quick skill for our next time together, or when you’re out in the field:

1. Listen Actively: Let the person finish their thought, even if you disagree strongly.
2. Acknowledge: Validate their viewpoint gently. (“I can see why that perspective is appealing.”)
3. Redirect to Principle: Pivot back to a core, non-negotiable principle of the gospel, citing scripture or a general revelation. (“While that addresses X, the foundational principle we find in Doctrine & Covenants 20:77 is about the necessity of the Atonement.”)

It takes practice, but it keeps the focus where it belongs: on Christ.
