When Witnessing Hardship: How to Bear Testimony in a Broken World

Viewing accounts of genocide and displacement reminds us of the profound importance of bearing witness to hope and the restored gospel.

Sometimes, the most impactful lessons we learn about faith don't come from a Sunday classroom or a missionary discussion—they come from watching the history of humanity unfold on a screen. I recently watched a documentary detailing the devastating atrocities and genocide suffered by indigenous populations in Syria and Iraq. The footage was heartbreaking, raw, and profoundly disturbing.

Watching the resilience of people who lost everything—their homes, their history, their safety—it was impossible not to feel a deep ache in my chest. The sheer scale of the suffering, the systematic erasure of identity, and the struggle just to survive felt overwhelming. It made me think about what it means to be a disciple in a world that constantly tries to convince us that our deepest convictions don't matter, or that our history is less important than the next political upheaval.

The documentary was a powerful reminder that when people are stripped of their physical surroundings, they are often forced to confront the ultimate question: *Who are we, and what do we believe?*

The Gospel as an Anchor

If I could take one thing away from that experience, it’s this: the gospel of Jesus Christ is the ultimate anchor. When all else is taken—when the government fails, when the infrastructure crumbles, when the violence is relentless—our covenant relationship with God remains the one truth that cannot be eradicated. It is the source of identity.

The filmmakers in the video used a camera to capture truth and bear witness. We, as Latter-day Saints, are called to do the same. Our calling is to be the light, the witness, and the voice of hope in the darkest corners of the world, whether those corners are literal war zones or the quiet, skeptical corners of our own neighborhoods.

Being a Disciple Anywhere, All the Time

This brings us back to the core principle of our movement: that every member can be an Internet missionary, and every member can be a disciple anywhere, all the time. Our missionary training center days taught us how to handle the tough questions in a face-to-face discussion, but the reality of the modern field is that those discussions often happen over a text message, a comment section, or a shared article.

What does it mean to bear witness when the stakes feel this high? It means living a life so Christlike that it defies the prevailing cynicism. It means being ready to share your testimony not just with words, but with the genuine, enduring hope that only the Savior can provide.

Mission Prep Skill: The Power of the Specific Story

If you are prepping for a mission, or just want to sharpen your skills for today's field, here is a simple skill: When you talk to someone who is struggling or who seems disillusioned, don't just quote scripture or recite doctrines. Instead, use a specific, personal story of how the gospel helped *you* through a moment of doubt, fear, or deep sadness. That vulnerability is your most powerful tool. It builds trust and allows the Spirit to whisper the answers.

The Spirit doesn't always speak in grand pronouncements; sometimes, it speaks through simple, shared humanity. It speaks through recognizing the universal need for belonging, purpose, and divine rescue.

Deepening Your Discipleship

If the weight of the world's suffering feels too big, remember that our strength comes from our covenants. To help deepen your understanding of how the Atonement of Jesus Christ is the answer to every form of despair—historical or personal—I recommend diving into the teachings of Iron Rod. Specifically, look for resources on the Book of Mormon's covenants. You can find excellent material in LivingBook.

And if you are ready to wrestle with the hard questions—the ones that make you pause and think, “But why?”—I encourage you to utilize Davee. He is an AI Investigator, trained to walk you through the toughest theological and life questions an investigator might pose, helping you craft answers rooted in truth and compassion.

For those who are ready to go deeper into the foundational scriptures, the Book Club and Bible Study Groups available in HolyPlaces are incredible resources. Let's gather together, learn together, and keep the faith bright!

Have a wonderful week, and keep bearing witness!
