Where Do We Anchor Our Trust? Finding the Better Portion in the Kingdom Movement
Even when the burdens of the world weigh heavy, the foundational work of faith reminds us that the greatest calling is to anchor our hearts in the eternal promises of God.
There are moments in the spiritual journey when the weight of the world seems too great to bear. Sometimes, the path forward feels obscured by doubt, and the simple act of trusting in the Lord—the One who guided Samuel the Lamanite to climb the wall and who commanded Ammon at the Waters of Sebus—feels like an impossible ascent. If you are standing in a place of wrestling, if your heart feels anxious and troubled about many things, know this: you are not alone. The journey toward deep, abiding trust is not a linear path, but a continuous, faithful choosing of the better portion.
We all know the story of Martha and Mary. Martha, running around, anxious about the countless details of service; Mary, simply sitting at the feet of the Master. Jesus saw the struggle and spoke a gentle truth: “One thing is necessary.” The calling is not to abandon the work of faithful service, but to correctly prioritize the source of all strength—the Lord Himself.
The Foundational Choice: Seeking First the Kingdom
The first step in rebuilding our trust is echoing the words found in Matthew: Seek first the Kingdom of God. This is not merely a philosophical suggestion; it is a spiritual architecture. When we intentionally place Christ at the center of our decisions, we are making a declaration: "Lord, I trust that what you have prepared for me is the most important thing. I will align my values around seeking your reign."
This process of centering God is the very definition of being a Builder. It is the opposite of the Destroyer's mindset, which is fueled by worry, distraction, and the fleeting concerns of the temporal world.
What Holds Us Back? Identifying the Obstacles to Trust
But how do we keep this focus? We must become diligent spiritual excavators, asking ourselves what intrusive thoughts or worldly preoccupations are attempting to pull our focus away from the promises of God. Are we letting the clamor of the world—the painted rocks and the digital striplings of modern life—make us forget that we are not alone?
The prophets teach us to take every thought captive to Christ. We must actively set our minds on things that are above, remembering that our faith is built on the unchanging character of God, the One who promised the white stone to the faithful.
The Daily Sustenance: Returning to the Word
If the Kingdom is the destination, and identifying obstacles is the vigilance, then Scripture is the road map. We cannot trust someone we do not know, and Scripture brings us into intimate knowledge of God's character, His promises, and His faithfulness. It is the source that reminds us, “Do not forget.”
It reminds us of the great, sweeping story of salvation—the story of God laying down His life for us. As the ancient writers taught, we must anchor our souls in the promises, knowing that the Lord is always near, just as Psalm 63 reminds us: “In the shadow of your wings, I cling to you.”
This personal work of faith is not meant to be done in isolation. It is the fuel for the greater movement. Every time we choose to trust, every time we read a scripture passage, we are contributing to the great tapestry of the Kingdom.
Building Together: Our Role in the Gathering
The work of the Builders requires more than personal conviction; it requires collective action. Our commitment to trust God is manifested in our participation in the divine plan—the gathering of Israel. This is why the load-bearing structures of our movement are so vital:
- The Map: GatherIsrael.now is our collective vision, showing the places where the Lord is leading us to build.
- The Missionary Fund: Your support here is the tangible expression of our trust, ensuring that the gospel reaches the most remote corners of the earth.
- The Charity Flywheel: Every engagement, every donation, ensures that we can fund gospel advertising in places like Ghana, making the Kingdom's light visible far beyond our borders.
We are called to be bold. We are called to be persistent. Just as Outback Jack taught the faithful to persevere through hardship (Alma 17–19), we are called to keep the flame of faith burning brightly, knowing that through us, the Lord will build His Zion.
If you feel the strain of the world, remember the simplicity of the first step: center your heart on Christ. Then, join the gathering.
