Where Do We Anchor When the World Feels Like It's Spinning?

When the worries pile up—from the economy to our kids' futures—it's easy to feel overwhelmed. Remember where to anchor your peace in Christ.

If you’ve been anywhere near the internet lately, you’ve seen it: the headlines, the market fluctuations, the endless stream of things that make you pause and think, "Oh man, I'm worried about that."

I remember a time, maybe when I was first getting my bearings back after my mission, when the sheer weight of expectation—both from the Church and from my own heart—felt like too much to carry. You look at the world, and it feels like a tangled mess of anxieties. We worry about our kids’ mental health, we worry about the next election cycle, we worry about the economy, and yes, we even worry about the mysterious things that happen when we Google a headache at 2 AM.

It's exhausting, isn't it? Worrying is like rocking in a chair—it gives you something to do, but you're not actually going anywhere. It drains the peace and it definitely stunts the spiritual growth we are trying to build.

But here’s the good news, the kind of good news that feels like a gentle whisper from the Spirit when everything else is shouting. Jesus gave us a promise, and it’s a powerful one: We do not have to worry.

When we study these promises, especially in the context of Matthew 6, it becomes crystal clear that worry has never actually solved a problem. It hasn't paid a bill, nor has it healed a broken relationship. It only increases the anxiety.

The Three Anchors for Our Peace

Jesus didn't just tell us *not* to worry; He gave us a divine roadmap for where to look instead. He said we must look to three specific places to anchor our hearts and minds:

  1. Our Father: We look to Him because He is always faithful. Think about the Creator of the heavens and the earth. He has the ultimate perspective on every worry we face.
  2. Our Faith: This isn't just belief; it's the active trust that keeps us moving forward when our feelings tell us to stop. It's the willingness to act on the commandments even when the outcome is unclear.
  3. Our Future: And this is the key—we look to the covenants we have made. We look to the eternal plan. We look to the fact that we are disciples of Christ, and that the Lord has promised to provide.

Looking to Our Father

The scripture reminds us to look at the birds of the air. They don't sow or reap, yet the Heavenly Father feeds them. And Jesus points out that we are infinitely more valuable to Him than the birds. When the world feels chaotic, remembering that divine oversight—that Fatherly care—is grounding. It helps us shift from the panic of the immediate moment to the peace of eternal provision.

A Little Mission Prep Skill: Differentiating Worry vs. Concern

As we continue our journey as rogue disciples, we are constantly being asked to teach others how to live right. A great skill to practice this week is distinguishing between genuine concern and paralyzing worry. Concern is asking, "What should I do?" Worry is asking, "What if everything goes wrong?" When you feel that knot of anxiety tightening, pause and ask yourself: Is this a problem I can solve by taking the next right action (concern)? Or is this a catastrophic 'what if' scenario that has no immediate action (worry)? If it's worry, redirect that energy immediately to scripture study or prayer, trusting in the covenants.

Remember, every member can be an internet missionary, and that starts with mastering our own peace. If you are wrestling with this topic, I highly recommend diving into the concept of covenants. You can find some excellent resources on this in the Iron Rod library, particularly surrounding the Book of Mormon covenants.

If you're looking for a place to deepen this study with others, check out the Book Club options in HolyPlaces, or join a Bible Study Group to discuss these promises with fellow disciples. Let's keep building up the body of Christ, one peaceful anchor point at a time. Keep pressing forward, disciples!
