You Are Influential: Being a Disciple Wherever the Spirit Leads

Sometimes, when we think about being a disciple, we picture the great mission field—the bustling streets, the mission headquarters, the intensive training at MTC. And those experiences are sacred, truly. But if you’ve spent time in the field, or if you’re preparing for your own mission, you know that the work doesn't stop when you leave the assigned territory. It doesn't stop when you walk through your front door.

The beautiful, powerful truth of the Latter-day Saint faith is that every single one of us has the potential to be an Internet missionary, a disciple anywhere, all the time. Our capacity to influence others—to be the "salt of the earth" and the "light of the world"—is built into our very identity as children of God.

In the latest message, the Brethren reminded us that we are inherently influential for God's glory. We are not waiting for a perfect moment or the perfect setting; we are called to use the proximity and access we already have.

The video discussed the profound example of the woman at the well. She wasn't given a theology degree or a perfect missionary manual; she was influenced by Jesus, and then she *acted*. She ran back to her village and influenced her community simply because she had experienced living water. She used her access, her relationships, and her testimony.

This is the skill I want us to focus on this week: Identifying your Sphere of Influence. Who are the people in your life that you interact with regularly? It might be your coworkers, your teammates, your neighbors, or even the people you meet at your local coffee shop. These are your natural 'field' locations—places where you have access and trust.

“You are the salt of the earth... Let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father which is in heaven.”

Being an 'influencer' doesn't mean giving a formal talk or holding a missionary discussion. It means being Christlike in your daily interactions. It means being the person who is reliable, who listens, who speaks of hope, and who lives a life that points to the Savior. It's about the subtle, consistent power of the Spirit.

The Power of Proximity and Preparation

As we are all preparing for our own divine calling—whether that’s a full-time mission, serving as a district leader, or simply maintaining our temple covenants—we must realize that our immediate circles are often the most potent ground for the work. We can’t wait until we are assigned to a new area to start building our faith in others.

If you are feeling overwhelmed by the sheer size of the world and the magnitude of the work, remember the story of the woman at the well. Her influence started small, right where she was. The Lord knows that He can use a single conversation, a word of encouragement, or an expression of love in your mundane routine.

I encourage you to think this week: Who is one person I interact with regularly who doesn't know Christ, and how can I be a better light for them? How can I increase my access and my consistency of discipleship with them?
