Your Burden Isn't a Weight—It's Your Traction

Sometimes the things we think are burdens are actually the very things that move us forward toward Christ. Let's talk about how to embrace the yoke.

If you’re a returned missionary, you know the feeling. You've been in the field for months, maybe years, and sometimes the load just feels impossibly heavy. It’s the combination of the grueling schedule, the emotional weight of difficult discussions, the exhaustion of making personal sacrifices—it all piles up. We look at that burden, and all we want is for it to disappear. We pray for relief, for a lighter day, for a reprieve.

It’s a universal feeling among us disciples. We carry so many things: our individual loads of obligations, opportunities, afflictions, and blessings. We worry that if we could just get rid of enough of it, we’d finally find the peace we crave.

But what if that assumption—that happiness means the absence of a load—is wrong? What if the very things that feel like anchors are actually the things giving us the spiritual traction we need?

I encountered this thought recently, and it forced me to re-examine my own understanding of the Plan of Happiness. We often think of burdens as purely negative, but the gospel teaches us that bearing a load is necessary. It’s the friction that keeps the wheels turning. It’s how we move forward with faith in Christ.

The Yoke: Where Burden Meets Grace

The Savior gave us the ultimate, perfectly personalized invitation: “Take my yoke upon you and learn of me, for I am meek and lowly in heart, and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

Think about that image. A yoke is a wooden beam placed across two animals, enabling them to pull together on a load. It doesn't magically remove the work; it doesn't magically remove the load. Instead, it places two separate sources of strength side-by-side, allowing them to move together in unified purpose.

When we take the yoke of Christ, we aren't just agreeing to be good; we are agreeing to pull *with* Him. Our best efforts, our discipline, and our daily struggle are placed alongside His perfect power. That's where the traction comes from. The difficulty of the work—the deep scripture study, the emotional vulnerability of missionary discussions, the sheer effort of maintaining our covenants—these things aren't punitive. They are the resistance that builds spiritual muscle.

Finding Traction in the Mundane

This concept is revolutionary because it shifts our perspective from 'What do I need to get rid of?' to 'How can I pull with Him?'

In our modern context, where we strive to be internet missionaries and disciples everywhere, it’s easy to get distracted by the unnecessary weight—the superficial things that keep us busy but pull us away from the core covenant path. We must be diligent in assessing our individual load. Is this obligation building my spiritual traction, or is it just creating noise?

This isn't a solo project. It’s a communal effort. When you feel overwhelmed, remember that your local district leader, your companions, and even your friends in the Church are part of the yoke. We are meant to pull together. We learn to rely on each other and, most importantly, on the Lord's strength.

A Practical Skill: Assessing Your Load

  1. Prayerful Assessment: When you feel heavy, pause. Ask yourself: Is this burden helping me press forward with faith, or is it just making me tired?
  2. Identify the Yoke: Where can I align my efforts with Christ’s example? Is there a scripture study, a service opportunity, or a commitment that draws me closer to Him?
  3. Shift Focus: Instead of focusing on the difficulty of the task, focus on the ease and light of the Master who is guiding you through it.

This principle is so vital that it's a perfect topic for our weekly Bible Study Group in HolyPlaces. We are diving deep into the covenants and how they function as our spiritual yoke.

Keep Pulling Forward

Don't let the weight of your life convince you that Christ is too far away, or that the work is too hard. Your burdens are your opportunities. They are the evidence that you are engaged in the highest work.

If you want to dig deeper into the nature of the yoke and the covenants that bind us to Christ, I highly recommend checking out the latest teachings from the Iron Rod authors available in LivingBook. I’ve included a reading recommendation below to help you anchor yourself in Christ's pattern.

Finally, if you ever feel confused about how to apply this principle to a specific challenge—say, how to talk about this with an investigator—don't hesitate to bring it to Davee. Our AI Investigator is trained specifically to walk you through the hardest questions and help you answer them with the Spirit's guidance.

We are all disciples on this journey, and we are meant to pull together.
